The Chairman of the Board of the St Jude Hospital (SJH), Doctor Ulric Mondesir, vowing to relentlessly pursue the opening of the new St Jude Hospital (SJH), has declared that the current location of the institution at the George Odlum National Stadium in Vieux Fort is a ‘dungeon of shame.’
In an interview with Radio Caribbean International (RCI) Tuesday, Mondesir lamented that eight years after the September 9, 2009 fire that destroyed the SJH at its original location, the hospital is still ‘buried in ashes’.
He noted the efforts of many individuals to facilitate the reconstruction of the medical facility.
But Mondesir asserted that from 2011, Doctor Kenny Anthony lamented the ‘extreme’ cost of the reconstruction.
“He said two years was long enough for the hospital to be completed. He won elections in 2011. 2016, nothing has been done properly,” the SJH Chairman observed.
He warned that politicians must be very careful about the things they do and say especially on the political platform.
“You said to the people: ‘I am visiting this hospital – that was maybe in 2013. The then Prime Minister, you know what he said: ‘I am concerned about the amount of money that has been spent on the hospital.’ But you know something, he said “This is money well spent.’ Well spent after visiting the site,” Mondesir told RCI.
He declared that if the money was well spent, either the then PM did not visit the hospital properly or his ability as Minister of Finance should be questioned.
“The money was not well spent. it could not give you a state of the art hospital…..If the money was well spent, it was well spent on behalf of the contractors, but badly spent on the construction of St Jude Hospital,” the SJH Chairman observed.
He said people are still languishing on beds without bed sheets at the current George Odlum stadium location in an environment that is not proper for someone who is ill.
“Too many people are dying – there are too many unavoidable deaths taking place,” Mondesir stated.
He said he has visited the hospital many times.
“It smells. You have people losing their dignity because of being in that stench. We have Doctors making ward rounds and every other person hearing what the Doctor is saying about the patient lying on the bed,” Mondesir asserted.
“We have a dead body wrapped up, I saw in a white sheet, and flies playing hide and seek from sore to sore onto the dead body which is wrapped up. Who can tell me, if you are a man with compassion and love for people, you enjoy seeing such a thing? To bring your people to such shameful conditions?” He stated.
Mondesir said he has expressed to everyone how he feels, as he is unhappy with what is taking place.
He spoke out against persons whom he said have reaped benefits from the delay in the opening of a reconstructed SJH and have allowed many persons to die because of their corruption.
“I promise you as the bible says, they will eat grass like (King) Nebuchadnezzar. They will not benefit from it,” Mondesir said, adding that it is time for the new hospital to be opened.
