Minister : Business people upbeat after VAT reduction

Minister in the Ministry of Finance, Doctor Ubaldus Raymond has asserted that a reduction in the Value Added Tax (VAT) from 15 to 12.5 percent was ‘gladly accepted’ by members of the public.

Saint Lucia in February this year announced the VAT reduction.

“Speaking with some consumers and even some merchants, especially in the supermarkets, they have seen an increase in the demand for their goods,” Raymond told reporters Thursday.

He asserted that with lower prices there would be increased demand and purchases.

Raymond declared that there is a heightened confidence among merchants in Saint Lucia.

“Clearly, there is a sign of happiness – there is upbeat in the business sector,” the minister told reporters.

He made reference to the last business survey here which he said indicated that the local business sector is happy with what is going on in Saint Lucia and the various strategies and policies undertaken by the United Workers Party (UWP) administration.

Some in the private sector must be happy with the Vat reduction. Prices have not been reduced so it’s a windfall for them. In the meantime there is no management of merchant margins so consumers have no benefits in this policy move.

Further, consumers are significantly disadvantaged as a result of reduction of Govt revenue. So our roads remain in a state of disrepair, schools dilapidated, other programs under funded, while the private sector makes profits. The sandals tax right off compounds the problem. The govt has no clue of how get out of this mess it has weaved.

While the salaries of their employees remain the same, mothers are unable to eat after feeding their kids nor are they able to pay rent.

Let’s not forget! This man has no moral competency to occupy his present position as a Minister. Hardly anyone believes anything emanating from his mouth as his credibility is dangerously dangling near zero. He should be relentlessly regarded with disdain for his loathsome behavior. Torrential amounts of condemnation should rain down on this depraved man.

Of course businesses will be happy: their margins are up while prices either remain the same or go up. The rich get richer and the poor poorer. Ubaldus knows better but he is caught in the lie and needs to keep on lying.

Of course Business owners(rich people) are happy because their income has increase by 2.5% while none of the reduction has reached the consumers(poor people).
