Bus driver attacked, girlfriend gang raped

Gros Islet bus drivers are angry over crimes being committed against them, including the armed robbery last week of a colleague and the gang rape of his girlfriend.

The Public Relations Officer of the Gros Islet Minibus Owners Association, Thomas St Louis, told St Lucia Times that the association is concerned about the crime situation in this country.

St Louis noted that bus drivers are not immune to attacks by criminals.

“Our members are being attacked too often,” St Louis declared.

He recalled that last week a driver went with his girlfriend to the Pigeon Point area when three masked men attacked the couple.

The PRO of the Gros Islet Minibus Owners Association told St Lucia Times that the bandits robbed the driver, tied him up and took his girlfriend from him.

“They abused her, raped her – three of them. Even when he begged to just rob him and  leave the girl along, the three of them raped her – it never made the news,” an obviously incensed St Louis stated.

He said drivers are extremely angry about the situation.

St Louis disclosed that on Monday afternoon another driver was attacked by an unknown individual.

He said the assailant hit the driver on the head with a stone.

“The guy is unconscious at Tapion Hospital as we speak,” St Louis said.

He said he wanted to commend National Security Minister, Hermangild Francis, who Thursday came out in support of capital punishment and asserted that the courts were giving a slap on the wrist to some criminals.

“This is my country – I love Saint Lucia and some of us are being naive when it comes to the criminal elements – we make excuses for criminals and we harbour them, when we the hard working citizens are held ransom by these guys,” St Louis declared.

He asserted that as a citizen, he deserves the right to work in an environment where he can achieve for himself and his family.

“We blame government for everything when these criminals have to be blamed,” St Louis said.

“This used to be the Helen of the West, now it is the wild, wild, west,” he asserted, adding that everyone has a gun and people are angry.

St Louis said that currently he is demotivated and does not want to invest.

I believe that it’s time to have a money less bus system like Barbados. Use tickets to get by in that way the drivers wouldn’t be robbed. Hopefully.

You pay cash for buses in Barbados. The cash is held on the bus inside an enclosed safe. Trinidad also has a cash bus system. Only the Government buses require you to buy a ticket before hand.

In any case, comparing our payment system to other countries doesnt matter. The robbers would still attack a bus driver if they find him in a vulnerable situation and peceive them to have a wallet full of fares collected.

The problem the bus drivers face are the same for anyone with a vehicle who decides to go in a secluded area. These criminals operate in the open and we law abiding citizens have to fear where we can go and at one time of day. In fact, they rob you at times and places where most would feel safe. I’ve been robbed during the day on the Babonneau bus stop in front of spectators.

Stop asking law abiding citizens to change their lifestyle and business to accommodate criminals.

These criminals target anyone they think they can over power. We need to fight back. Take back our streets. We know who these people are but we are either afraid or protect them. It’s time we start giving harsh sentences to robbers. And if they rape or kill in the process, death penalty should be an option.

Murder, rape and robberies are becoming too common in St. Lucia. Serious measures have to be implemented to eradicate these social abnormalities as soon as yesterday. The time for talk is over. Urgent and decisive policies and action are needed. Not enough attention is being given to galloping phenomenon. The present ruling regime is dealing with this most serious matter haphazardly. There are no methodical or systematic policies and programs in place to curtail gruesome attacks on people’s person .

This is really a sad state we are in. The word of God say if a people that are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and turn from their wicked ways….I will heal their land.” I don’t know how we are going to fix our mess so we can call upon God. It’s no lie I feel pain for the driver and especially his girlfriend. But I must encourage you driver to stand by her side. Help her through her pain. I know it maybe tough but remember God .

So all the rapes and robberies that occurs inside people’s houses what’s the excuse for this? It doesn’t matter where you are the thieves and the rapist will do as they please because they know they will get away with it. And people like you encourage slackness. People should be able to roam and be safe.

In all that talk about harsh sentences and death penalty you first have to arrest the perpetrator, charge him, present the evidence and secure a conviction. Only then we can talk sentencing.

How many rape and murder cases unsolved and now cold cases. When last we hear a murder or rape trial completed and the perpetrator(s) convicted and sentenced. Is either lack of evidence, no evidence or case fall down due to a technicality.

We know how slow the wheel of the justice system is here. Some of these criminals get to walk free, thanks to the likes of Mary Francis and Martinus Francois et al. They family may hurt but I love that they are taking each other out this year. I just wish they will not bring any other citizen of god’s standing in on their messes.

The can keep playing bull’s eye with each other.

Use the ‘5 whys’ technique and you will find the answer to all your social ills.

For example: 1) Why did he rob the bank? Because he was broke. 2) Why was he broke? Because he doesn’t have a job. 3) Why doesn’t he have a job? Because the economy is in the toilet. 4) Why is the economy so bad? Because politicians are clueless and self-centered. 5) Why are they clueless? Because we elect smooth-talkers…things like that.

It is a very effective tool, and we can use it to find the root of any problem in our lives. Hanging a criminal will only be replaced by another, find the root of your cancer and treat it.

I was with you until we got to answer number 3

The reasons they are without a job is because they 1. Prefer to sit on the block and hustle where they make quick money rather than finding menial work, which is normally where their qualifications land them/ learning a trade.
And why that is is because in school, they were daydreaming on becoming millionaires rather than laying attention to the lessons taught.
Why would they daydream of such? The substance of movies, of course. Everyone has a big house/houses, vehicles and the works.

I’m tired of us blaming no work. They just lazy and what to live large…but I eh see one criminal that rolling on the block that looking like he worth anything….sorry but the more they steal more drug they still..they still POOR. I don’t see them taking that money to invest in a piece of land, their child education, birth control…upgrading their environment and standard of living. Instead they buy gold chain some marginally name brand items that they still don’t look good in and perhaps five cars that will depreciate. Poverty is a mindset….getting out if it does not start with money…starts with a change of mine

The policing system in Saint Lucia needs updating in keeping with current trend. Given the lack of resources of the Police the media should be used to have persons suspected of criminal offenses and wanted persons to report to the police stations, their pictures should be plastered on Facebook and other social media detailing what they are needed for so that their friends and associates can encourage them to report in. This is being done in Jamaica where persons of interest to the police are are requested to report in. They can come in with their lawyers.
