Man held after attempted rape in Vieux Fort

A man was held by public spirited citizens Tuesday night, after he allegedly attempted to rape a young woman.

Law enforcement sources told St Lucia Times that the incident occurred at around 7 pm at Hewanorra Orchard.

It is reported that the young woman, while walking, noticed that a man was following her.

The woman reportedly decided to change her route, but recognised that the man was still behind her.

The man is said to have gained ground on her as she tried to escape, grabbed her, put his hand over her mouth and attempted to drag her into some bushes.

According to information obtained by St Lucia Times, two male individuals who happened to be passing by and noticed the commotion intervened, grabbing the assailant and subduing him.

The man, said to be from Grace, was subsequently handed over to the police.

St. Lucia law prohibits the publishing of identities of persons accused of rape.

St Lucia Times understands that Tuesday night’s incident is the latest in a spate of attempted rapes in the South of the Island.

Included in the recent incidents was an attempt by two men to rape a blind woman in her seventies who managed to put up a vigorous fight, forcing them to abandon their depraved plan.

About a month ago there was also a rape attempt on Clarke Street, Vieux Fort, it is reported.

Maximum respect to those two individuals who foiled the attempted rape. There should be community watches especially in crime infested areas of the country. This should help to minimize criminal activities. St. Lucians are now faced with the horrid reality that walking the streets alone at night is hazardous . Despite the uptick in crime there is deafening silence from the PM, his cabinet colleagues, and the top echelon of the Police Force. Should the citizens resort to arming themselves and exact vigilante justice for protection? I hope not!

If so why does God allow other women to get raped. The glory goes to the two gentlemen who saved her if they were not there she would have been raped and possibly killed. The glory goes to them and them alone.
