A man was held by public spirited citizens Tuesday night, after he allegedly attempted to rape a young woman.
Law enforcement sources told St Lucia Times that the incident occurred at around 7 pm at Hewanorra Orchard.
It is reported that the young woman, while walking, noticed that a man was following her.
The woman reportedly decided to change her route, but recognised that the man was still behind her.
The man is said to have gained ground on her as she tried to escape, grabbed her, put his hand over her mouth and attempted to drag her into some bushes.
According to information obtained by St Lucia Times, two male individuals who happened to be passing by and noticed the commotion intervened, grabbing the assailant and subduing him.
The man, said to be from Grace, was subsequently handed over to the police.
St. Lucia law prohibits the publishing of identities of persons accused of rape.
St Lucia Times understands that Tuesday night’s incident is the latest in a spate of attempted rapes in the South of the Island.
Included in the recent incidents was an attempt by two men to rape a blind woman in her seventies who managed to put up a vigorous fight, forcing them to abandon their depraved plan.
About a month ago there was also a rape attempt on Clarke Street, Vieux Fort, it is reported.
