The Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Celebrated 106th National Day

PRESS RELEASE: The Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) hosted the 106th National Day Reception on October 6 evening at Sandals Grande Resort. H.E. Governor General Dame Pearlette Louisy, Hon. Prime Minister Allen Chastanet, Hon. Minister Stephenson King, Hon. Minister Lenard Montoute, Hon. Minister Bradley Felix, Hon. Minister Dominic Fedee, Hon. Philip J. Pierre, Opposition Leader, and over 200 guests from various circles of the society were in attendance. Ambassador Douglas Shen and   Prime Minister Allen Chastanet delivered remarks, followed by music performance by Royal Saint Lucia Police Band.

Ambassador Shen expressed his gratitude to the Saint Lucian Government and friends from the private sector for their strong support and reiterated Taiwan’s firm commitment to cooperate with Saint Lucia in its social and economic development.

He noted that although Taiwan and Saint Lucia are thousands of miles apart, the two island nations share many interesting similarities, including their identical shapes, colonial history, past reliance on banana export, and adherence to democracy, freedom and the rule of law.

Ambassador Shen stated that cooperation between Taiwan and Saint Lucia has borne abundant fruit in the areas of agriculture, information technology, medical care, education and infrastructure development. He looked forward to more progress for the coming year in the form of new CDP projects, free Wi-Fi hotspots, introduction of better quality fruits and vegetables, and a revamped Orchid Center in Union.

Ambassador Shen took the opportunity to thank the Saint Lucian Government for supporting Taiwan’s participation in the United Nations and its specialized agencies, and reaffirmed Taiwan’s desire to contribute to the global effort in combating climate change and promoting sustainable development.

Prime Minister Chastanet commended Taiwan for its pivotal role in Saint Lucia’s human and social development, and expressed gratitude for the profound level of cooperation and assistance extended to Saint Lucia. He expected that the two countries to reach an agreement on the framework of future cooperation, and encouraged Taiwanese companies to use the island as a gateway to the North American and Caribbean market.

After the remarks, Governor General Dame Pearlette Louisy, Prime Minister Chastanet and Madame Chastanet, Ambassador Shen and Madame Shen cut the birthday cake to celebrate the 106th National Day of Republic of China (Taiwan). The evening was followed by music rendition by Saint Lucia Police, and songs performed by Ambassador Shen, Minister Felix and Mr. Rick Wayne.
