Sir the young man attacked the business owner and he discharged a shot in defence, now the young man died but I don’t think he was out to kill him, if it were you what would you do? Sometimes before we talk we have to put ourselves in someone else’s shoes.

We will never hear the young man’s side of the story. He might as well been shot in the back. Better yet shot outside and carried inside. How about that side?

I hope you do as you suggest when you are confronted by an aggressive mentally deranged individual. This guy’s mother is hospitalized as we speak. He brutally attacked her on Friday and had to. E shot in the leg by his uncle. He disappeared and attacked this guest house owner as he entered a room on his property. This mental case had taken refuge there. So miss C put yourself in the shoes of this businessman. I guess you would have hugged and prayed for the mental challenged man then take him for treatment. We could have always done better. But only from the sidelines.

Am not say pray or hug him. It is this ignorance that is cause all the back goodness in ST Lucia. I am a Social worker and deal with aggressive behavior all the time by my clients, so I am very educated in mental heath for 8yrs now thank you. Not here to attack but to state the obvious. He shouldn’t have been kill just subdued ok. It’s not his fault that we have no system to deal with his condition. So he has little control on what he was doing. This was not needed is all am say this is someone’s life that was taken here ppl this should be last resort at all times to kill someone. God be with us in Lucia

Miss C, I suspect that you are mentally challenged to even suggest what you are. You are living in dream land or a utopian society. No wonder our society system is that backward. The employees reflect the organization. sad.

What is working for other forward countries u guys should start trying it. Because where I live mental health don’t get shot down and killed there are proper care and support provided so maybe just maybe a page should be taken and don’t come here fighting ppl and get educated. Why waste my time 😁

At this moment the business man is devastated because he never intended to kill this boy

Looks like you have all the facts. Why did he not contact the police when he notice someone was inside. We need to be sensitive to both families. I am not saying the business man was wrong, but could this situation be handled better?
And FYI there was no deadly weapon.

He has no policies to deal with crime.

The family and also the relatives of this young man , while i quite understand it is not an easy task to cope with a mental patient it was your duty to make sure that this young man is not a threat to society , it can be done , it is a situation i’ve delt with and i got help with the police and the welness center , we have to take care of our own, may he R .I.P.

Man came to his property . Mr brave yut walked on him with cutlass.
Business yman had to protect himself.
I would have done the same if I was in his position.
In a fast thinking situation like that you think one would have time to call the police if he knows that he has a LEGAL FIRE ARM TO DEFEND AND PROTECT HIMSELF AND PROPERTY??
St.lucians we are to quick to run into judgement.
How would the business man know that the young man was mentally unstable?.

If he has gone to the premises before don’t you think that the business man spoke to the family and was aware of the situation. Appreciate the comment but get your facts correct. Profound condolences to the relatives of the deceased. This incident seems like a clear cut case of self-defense. It’s always unfortunate when a life is lost but the businessman felt compelled to protect his own life. Mental illness, like most other things, is not taken as serious as it should be. It is my hope that the government and the entire society would give the mentally ill persons the serious attention that they deserve. We ought to provide the required medical treatment to these unfortunate persons with the hope of rehabilitating them to good health.

It’s always sad when someone loses their life but we have to look at the facts here. Mental illness is not written on anyone face but someone enters your property and approach you with a cutlass. You’re armed (especially if you’re legally armed). The first thing you would do is stand your ground and defend yourself. In a panic start of mind you would just discharge your firearm. Sadly it was fatal but what if he had never gotten to his gun. Would the results be different? I sympathise with both parties. People when you have family or friends with mental illness don’t overlook them. Seek help for them.

its sad that this happens..but as a family member of a mentally ill person..i can say this the mental hospital doesn’t have the means to help the mentally challenged. Some can even escape from there… Last incident i wished that the police would put an end to the individual’s life because this person kept hurting my family members almost killing them only to have the individual back out….I certainly do-not want the individual to hurt anyone else far less my own family members…so to those of you who say something better could have been done..you haven’t faced a ruthless unconcerned individual who just sees red…not saying that this is what happened to this young man…but stop making assumptions cause you are not in the situation. Another life gone by a battle which isn’t on this plain..its what we can’t see….i pray for comfort for his family, and for the gentleman who had to shoot in defense..it will be traumatizing for both parties
