Suspects in Saadia Byron murder remain behind bars; no charges filed

The two men being held by police in connection with the murder of 32-year old Saadia Byron of Laborie remain behind bars but police say neither have been charged.

Reports say one of the men is a known sex offender in the area while the other is a former boyfriend of the murdered mother of three.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) with Responsibility for Crime Management, George Nicholas, told a news conference on Monday that investigators are ensuring they review the evidence carefully before filing charges.

“We are not in a position to proffer any charges as yet. We are still in the preliminary stages. We need to ensure that we cover all our ends, dot all our t’s before we’re in a position to proffer any charges at all,” ACP Nicholas said.

The victim’s brother Chris Byron told journalists that she previously made several reports against one of the suspects but never got assistance from the police.

“He’s always waiting for her in the dark, always grabbing her hands, always attacking her. She made several reports to the police station and again, no police, nobody ever did anything on her behalf until this weekend,” Chris stated.

According to ACP Nicholas, the records show that Saadia Byron made a single sexual assault report to the vulnerable persons unit in Vieux Fort in 2014 but she later asked for the investigation to be discontinued.

“According to our records, she indicated that she wanted no further action in the matter. She wanted police to discontinue the investigation. That is what our records can confirm at this point,” ACP Nicholas said.

Police say they have not ruled out the possibility that the victim may have been raped before she was killeed. Relatives say her body was found semi-nude and a used condom was recovered from the scene.

Saadia Byron was returning home from graduation rehearsal for a skills course she had just completed when she was murdered and her body buried under rocks roughly 100 yards from her home.

Her death brings to 51, the number of homicides recorded in St Lucia so far for 2017.

The Police will do or say anything now to cover their lazy asses. If they took time to investigate the matter when the lady came to them many times to make reports, that could have have been avoided. It”s all the fault she was murdered.

The police are always quick to defend the police.
When you go to the police station to make these so-called petty reports on sexual harassment and attempted rape, threats and so forth .The police take it so lightly.
I know of a particular incident where an attempted rape was reported and for this matter to go nowhere ,the. Perpetrator was arrested ,never charged!!!!!!.
Then released ,the matter went to court and before the court date the perpetrator was assisted by a POLICE OFFICER to migrate off island to ENGLAND.
THERE ARE CORRUPTED POLICE OUT THERE ,TRUST ME!!
THERE ARE ALSO HONEST AND TRUST WORTHY POLICE OFFICERS OUT THERE .BIG UP TO THE HONEST POLICE OFFICERS IN ST.LUCIA .

To the Byron family.I wish that you’ll could have afforded a private investigator to put on you’ll loved one case cuz mind you,
That condom might just disappear from the investigating unit. The envelop of evidence might just be gone man…..

If you have a used condom take it to the crime lab for dna hopefully you have one…omg. Why is there a known sex offender roaming where there are schools etc? The citizens have a right to know who the pathetic sicko is….why is this a secret. People are getting raped left and right and there is no counseling available for such a horrific offense which leaves the victim scared for life and it’s a shame. Please please please get the victims children in professional therapy…they will need it.🙏🙏😂😂😂

That’s a major problem. The absence of a functioning crime lab. What makes it sad is that we have a multi million dollar state of the art facility but its been sitting idle for the past three years. Can we afford then to continue spending money to maintain that facility and have to spend tens of thousands referring samples overseas which is going to be time consuming? Some serious thinking there is long overdue as police investigations are being severely hampered.

My deepest condolences to saadia’s family. My heart is even more hurt for her little ones. First of all i don’t understand how after all these rapes that the identity of those monsters still being hidden.
I could be sitting on a bus next to one coming home from work at night and don’t even know it. Then god forbid he followed me home. They so busy protecting them and forgetting about all thoes inocent women and children out there.
I think maybe again god forbid only when it start hitting their doorstep then they will try to change that so called law…
