Prime Minister travels to the United States

Prime Minister Allen Chastanet travelled to the United States Wednesday where he is expected to meet with representatives of Desert Star Holdings Limited (DSH), the company looking to undertake the $US 2.6 billion Pearl of the Caribbean project in St Lucia.

The trip comes as work appears to have commenced on the construction of a horse race track in Vieux Fort.

Speaking to journalists ahead of his departure, Chastanet said he will attend an international equine awards ceremony on Thursday night and participate a major horse race with a jackpot of $16 million.

“The horse racing track has recommenced. We are hoping to be able to have the first race either December 13th or we’re considering maybe having one on December 13th but a larger race which will coincide with the 40th anniversary of St Lucia’s Independence in February,” the Prime Minister said.

Prime Minister Chastanet is accompanied on the trip by Infrastructure Minister Stephenson King, Commerce and Investment Minister Bradley Felix, Sports Minister Lenard Montoute along with SLASPA Acting General Manager Daren Cenac and the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Infrastructure Ivor Daniel.

The Prime Minister disclosed that the team will be making presentations to representatives of the major cruise lines with regards to the development of a cruise ship facility in Vieux Fort.

They will also meet with potential financiers for other major infrastructural projects that the government hopes to undertake, he added.

“We are in advanced discussions with the cruise industry. We actually have more detailed drawings to be able to share with them. The goal here is to now start develop a term sheet to actually get their official participation in the development of the port in the south,” Chastanet said.

Prime Minister has come under fire from critics over his frequent travels abroad.
