88.5 Soufriere FM Celebrates 6th Anniversary

PRESS RELEASE:- SOUFRIERE, St Lucia, -The management and staff of 88.5 Soufriere FM are gearing up to observe a milestone. On Sept 1st, 2016, the community radio station will celebrate its sixth year of operation.

As with all radio stations there is added hype around the anniversary period.  Soufriere FM has operated no differently and intends to increase its public engagement during that period.

This year, a number of activities have been scheduled in order to observe this landmark.

The activities include a ceremony on Thursday, September 1st, 2016, to honor programme hosts and the staff for their continued support; a grand bar-b-que which will feature live performances by various youth groups and bands from the community on Friday, September 2nd, 2016; a road show on the morning of Saturday, September 3rd, 2016; followed by a grand country and western dance in the evening at the Still Plantation

. The celebration will culminate on Sunday, September 4, 2016, with a beach party on the Hummingbird Beach.

According to the event’s coordinator, Curtis Didier, “the activities while celebratory, will serve as a marketing tool for the station to increase its listenership and sales. At present, Soufriere FM has the potential to grow its listenership, break even and to make a profit if greater effort is made to market it,” he added.

88.5 Soufriere FM came onto the airwaves on September 1st, 2010, much to the exhilaration and delight of project sponsors; United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Soufriere Regional Development Foundation.

“There were many hiccups and challenges along the way to getting the station started – location and inadequacy of funding being two of them.  Despite the obstacles, the board of directors and management of the Soufriere Regional Development Foundation persisted. Today, we have overcome most of the fledgling challenges, therefore going forward, our new focus  is on increasing our coverage and programme diversity thereby resulting in a higher listenership,” said Projects and Operations Manager, Dominic Alexander.

The radio station first started its operations as a community radio station at Sulphur Springs Park but was relocated to Town Extension in mid-2014.

Its listening audience is from Soufriere through to Vieux-Fort, with additional communities like Canaries and Babonneau to the extreme north of the island, reporting good reception quality in certain quarters.
