The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has “initiated disciplinary proceedings” against actor Will Smith over his actions at Sunday’s Oscars, the group announced on Wednesday.

“Board of Governors today initiated disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Smith for violations of the Academy’s Standards of Conduct, including inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behavior, and compromising the integrity of the Academy,” the organization behind the Oscars said in a statement.

The statement also claims that Smith was asked to leave the ceremony after the incident “and refused.” The Academy said it recognizes “we could have handled the situation differently.”

Smith has come under fire in recent days after he stormed the stage on Sunday and slapped presenter Chris Rock after Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith.

“Mr. Smith’s actions at the 94th Oscars were a deeply shocking, traumatic event to witness in-person and on television. Mr. Rock, we apologize to you for what you experienced on our stage and thank you for your resilience in that moment,” the statement added. “We also apologize to our nominees, guests and viewers for what transpired during what should have been a celebratory event.”

Another board meeting is set to take place on April 18, at which time, “the Academy may take any disciplinary action, which may include suspension, expulsion, or other sanctions permitted by the Bylaws and Standards of Conduct,” the statement said.

“Consistent with the Academy’s Standards of Conduct, as well as California law, Mr. Smith is being provided at least 15 days’ notice of a vote regarding his violations and sanctions, and the opportunity to be heard beforehand by means of a written response,” the statement said.

CNN has reached out to Smith’s representatives for comment.

Still the talk of the town

The strong statement from the Academy comes as the conversation over the slap heard around the world was showing no signs of cooling.

Rock has remained publicly silent on the incident, so all eyes are on the start of his comedy tour, which kicks off Wednesday night in Boston.

Comedians Wanda Sykes and Amy Schumer, two of the three hosts on Sunday night, also spoke out on Wednesday with strong words of support for Rock, as did Rock’s brother.

Meanwhile, Smith has maintained a low profile on social media since issuing his lengthy apology on Monday.

“I was out of line and I was wrong,” he wrote in part. “I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”

Smith’s apology was not enough, however, to quell the reaction from Academy leaders, who said in a letter to members on Wednesday that they were “upset and outraged.”

This came as many leveled criticism toward the Academy for its handling of the incident on Sunday night.

Sykes told Ellen DeGeneres on an appearance on her talk show that she felt Smith should have been escorted out.

“For them to let him stay in that room and enjoy the rest of the show and accept his award, I was like, ‘How gross is this? This is just the wrong message,'” she said.

  1. Will did it right,,all you powder puffs dont know how to defend your womans honor yet send your kids across seas to kill or be killed,,GROW UP AND HONOR YOUR LOVE!!

  2. Will Smith and other comedians have made themselves at the expense of other. He has dished out on others and other’s family members so, he should have sucked it up and take it like a man. There is absolutely no way, on this green earth, what Smith did is acceptable. He should have been kick out and barred from future events . . . including blacklisting his butt! The Crow has said so even though he is a Will Smith fan.

  3. Will Smith is a bully & is lucky this didn’t happen anywhere else because he would’ve been charged with assault & battery & thrown in jail just like any of us would! Who does he think he is??! He ruined the entire evening for everyone!! He ruined it for those who put the entire event together, all of the actors who had worked so hard to present their spectacular talents & to all who really looked forward to such a normally beautiful event! I think the Academy should revoke his Oscar & ban him for good from any future Oscar ceremonies. I hope the Academy follows through because I along with many others don’t plan on watching the Oscars anymore!!

  4. Chris didn’t know about the alopecia Will smith of all people know you don’t hit somebody because of words!

In this industry it calls for tough skin and I’m sure everybody has everyone’s number where they could of called eachother afterwards.

It’s also not just about Will and Chris other celebrities felt like their time to shine was deemed due to Will smith’s selfishness everybody was getting cracked on that night and handle the night professionally!

    Practice what you preach!
Emotional or not you let the devil use you at the height of your success!

Jada even laughed before and after the smack!

  5. Chris Rock is a class act, apparently you can joke about jada screwing their son’s friends but not her bald head. I would have understood Will slapping August Alsina for sleeping with jada but slapping Chris for a joke about a movie character? This was the biggest night of will’s career so naturally his narcissistic wife ruined it for him just like always. We thought Bobby Brown was the problem only to find Whitney was, don’t be fooled here, it’s not Will it’s his pariah wife Jada that makes him look and act foolish at every turn. I stand with Chris Rock.

  7. How come everyone is only feeling sorry for Chris Rock. What about his disrespect for Jada. How come there is no remorse or apology from anyone to Jada. Yes, Will was definitely out of line but so was Chris Rock. Atleast Will was man enough to apologize for his action to the whole world. I wish all men would stand up for their wives.. Hope all of this has a happy ending.

    • He was man enough to apologize after the fact! But a real man think before they do! Chris said what he said do I think he should had been smacked on TV at the Oscar’s! Sometimes you have to pick and choose your battles💯

That’s like telling your children it’s ok to hit somebody because somebody said they had a big head and it hurt their feelings. You’ll be hitting ppl for the rest of your life all because what somebody said.

    • Really! no body have the right to assault u because they don’t like what you say. Why is Jada so quite after she got on snoop dog for just threatening Gale.

  8. Will Smith allows his wife to have sex with men outside of the marriage. Will and Jada are evil soulless goblins that are bound for hell. Don’t be distracted. This is all Hollywood tricks.

  9. I don’t feel that Will is guilty of anything but poor judgment. It should have been handled after the awards. However he was emotional at the time it took place. I don’t know how true this story is, but there is a rumor that Chris and Jada went on a date, a long time ago before Will, which she said was terrible. He was embarrassed and called himself getting back at her. What your thoughts about that.
    Nay from Laurel

  10. Me I stand with smith ….I hate people insulating women in public infarct this so called Rock need to apologize to Jada Smith .#I STAND WITH SMITH #💪💪💪

  11. I could see if she was balding from chemo. I get that.
Alopecia ? Are you kidding. This is like hitting a comedian because they made a joke about u being overweight when you have obesity.
Fuethermore this was not a slap. It was so hard, it was a palm strike. Not a slap.
Tons of men shave their head due to androgenic alopecia including me today. I’m not about to punch anyone in the face about it and would be hopeful Chris Rock made a joke a out it for me so we can both have a good laugh.

    • Right. Jada needs to lighten up about the alopecia thing. She’s not dying and she can easily wear wigs for movie roles if she doesnt already. Just shows how out of touch with regular people she is.

  12. I agree that Will Smith could have handled the “slap” situation differently. I felt embarrassed for everyone concerned. This is not the first time Chris Rock has made a joke at an award show that were aimed at Will Smith. I think he is jealous of what Will has and uses his “jokes” to voice it. Perhaps Chris needs to stick to his lame jokes but be more sensitive and leave REAL PEOPLE out of them!!!

  13. Where is Chris’s apology to Jada? Every joke is not a joke. Comedians get too much leeway, some Comedians use it to debase others.. When is being insensitive to others ever a joke? Someone should have put a stop to that long ago. Just as it is taboo for some words or topics in comedy, personal attacks with humor should be also. If you can’t be funny unless you are demeaning others, maybe you are in the wrong field.

  14. People are saying that Chris Rock was doing to much, when in actuality, he was doing what he was hired to do, and before he was so rudely interrupted, he was doing an outstanding job, and that it was a cheap joke at Jada’s expense… My question is: What exactly is a cheap joke at other’s expense, especially when people seem to find the crack jokes towards Whitney Houston hilarious… What about the Vitiligo jokes about Micheal Jackson those really cracked people up… And what about Richard Pryor crawling around on the floor mistaking lint for crack or the time he set himself on fire 🔥 using a crack pipe, people told jokes for years about it… And let’s not forget about the lgbtq community because jokes abound at their expense… Then there are the mentally disabled, jokes about mental disabilities and disorders are told on a frequent basis… So tell me again; why are bald jokes off limits? What about fat jokes or skinny jokes, or Black, white, red and yellow jokes… And let’s not forget; Mama and daddy jokes… It was a joke, plain and simple, and as a comedian most things are not off limits, and as far as jokes go, that bald 👨‍🦲 joke was rated PG!!!

    • You are so right. A joke is a joke and I have heard much worst. Will is a comedian and should have known better. In fact he was also laughing at the joke before he took action. The wrong action. If you didn’t agree with the joke let it be know in you award acceptance speech.

  15. This clown doesn’t have a Brain! Will Smith was totally out of line! What he did was criminal! Any other situation he would have been thrown in jail and be criminally charged with assault.

    • Exactly! Regardless whether it was a tasteless joke or not, it’s still a big difference between a joke and a physical assault. Smith should have known better and I’m shocked that he hasn’t been charged. I can understand why Rock would be apprehensive to file charges but it shouldn’t be on him when you have a room full of witnesses and the entire event was recorded. If Smith wants to act like a “bad boy” instead of a grown man, then he should be willing to face the consequences.

  16. Chris Rock was VERY out of line. His comment was insulting and out of line. Successful comedians should know that just because you CAN make a joke about something, doesn’t mean you should. As for the bunk about Chris not being aware of Jada’s medical condition, I believe it is exactly that–BUNK! It was a cheap shot and CHRIS is the one who should be apologizing to Jada. As for the public’s morbid reaction to all this, Chris should be thanking Will for the boost this is giving his career and current tour. Will may be guilty of poor judgement, but that’s all. And the academy’s reaction is pretty sanctimonious and over-the-top. If they would have the courage to remove their thumbs from under their armpits for 5 seconds and HONESTLY investigate the situation, they would realize that Chris Rock is just as much to blame as Will Smith. But of course given the academies lofty opinion of themselves, that will never happen. Proof positive of why next to nobody watches the oscar awards anymore.

  17. This was a very bad moment for Will Smith. Sometimes our actions take over our thoughts . In this case actions did . Will could have handled it better but there family has been in the cross airs for a while now and finally someone erupted. Which yes they put there business out but let’s ask ourselves this , if it had been someone not as popular as Will Smith would this be getting all the attention it’s getting now?

  18. Leave the man alone!Chris Rock always bully people with his jokes! Why did they ask him any way!No more movies for him to play a crack head! Or a meth hea! Leave Will Smith alone

  19. @g.w Buddy pleasssse Will Smith is a top actor with enough money to buy you. He should of darn well conducted himself better or just tell Chris how he felt after the show. You have nothing to defend on Will’s part.

  20. Children this is what your right turns into your wrong means Chris Rock was the Bully and Will and jada Smith were the victims now it turned around and now Chris is the Victim sigh, life eh
