Ambassador: France sad over “Brexit’ vote

French Ambassador to the OECS, Eric de la Moussaye, has said that his country is sad over the vote by the United Kingdom to exit the European Union.

“Is is about forty-thee years that the UK has belonged to the European Union,” de la Moussaye observed.

The Ambassador recalled that the UK  was not part of the EU in the beginning for various reasons, but later joined as one of the main countries not only of the group, but the world as well.

He said that the EU promotes human rights, liberty and freedom.

The French Ambassador asserted that thanks to the EU, here is peace on the European continent.

The diplomat noted that some people are of the opinion that with 28 member countries, the grouping is too large.

But he disagreed.

The French diplomat described the EU as being very strong despite the fact that the UK has opted out.

“We will stay strong – we won’t have a problem about that,” he stated.

The French Ambassador said because France respects democracy, it respects the UK decision.

“If we respect the decision we have to have the consequence of the decision immediately because if you read the press, they are saying that  they have two years and the treaty says that they have time. No, they have no time,” he told reporters.

De la Moussaye said France wants the UK to leave because of the decision that it took.

He asserted that the people of the EU would not understand why the UK would stay and have special treatment if it does not want to stay in the EU.

“If they do not want to stay in the European Union, they go out of the European Union,” the French Ambassador declared.

He said agreements and relations can still be had with the UK.

However he disclosed that the issue was not that, but that the UK should leave the UK as quickly as possible.

De la Moussaye said the British exit would have consequences for the EU.

Noting that not everyone in the UK was for the split, he spoke of the need for the people of France to recognize that European Union is for their benefit  including their prosperity, security and social affairs.

“We have to explain better than we do,” he declared.

The Ambassador did not feel that quitting the European Union is an issue for France, as he asserted that more than sixty percent of the population wants to remain and parties there are not pushing for a referendum.

“It’s not a subject for us,” the diplomat said.

He explained that when there are difficulties in a family, divorce is not compulsory.

The Ambassador said the same was true of the European Union, where discussion is necessary to promote reform and make progress.
