Anthony formally resigns as SLP leader

Former Saint Lucia Prime Minister, Doctor Kenny Anthony, has submitted his letter of resignation as Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) leader, according to well-informed sources.

The Times has been reliably informed that Anthony’s letter was submitted yesterday.

The former Prime Minister, who was reelected as MP for Vieux Fort South with a relatively small majority in the June 6, 2016 elections, had indicated  after his party lost at the polls, that he would not only quit as SLP leader, but also not lead the opposition.

Speaking to reporters ahead of  Anthony’s formal resignation, party General Secretary, Leo Clarke, had explained yesterday that after the formal resignation of the political leader was received, within seven days a national council meeting will be held.

The meeting will endorse the first deputy political leader, Philip J. Pierre, to act in the position of SLP leader until the next party convention, the party General Secretary stated.

Clarke said the normal date of the convention would be October-November, where there would be an open election for the post of political leader of the SLP.

Informed sources have told the Times that elected members of the SLP are expected to meet later today to choose a leader of the parliamentary opposition.

The SLP lost the last general elections by a margin of 11 to 6.
