Antigua: Saint Lucian Who Beat Up His Girlfriend And Her Child Awaits Sentencing

A Saint Lucian national who admitted to two counts of battery for beating up his girlfriend and her 8-year old daughter, is awaiting sentencing by a court in Antigua.

Local news reports did not identify the man by name.

Bu they said he is a 42-year old mechanic.

According to Antigua Observer, he was remanded to Her Majesty’s prison to await sentencing on October 14, 2020.

The court heard that on October 3, 2020, the man started beating his girlfriend while driving to their home, after accusing her of infidelity.

When the woman’s eight year old daughter intervened by by hitting the assailant with a glass bottle, he responded by punching her in the eye, it was reported.

The man is later said to have attacked his girlfriend with a cutlass.

He was subsequently arrested by the police.

According to Antigua Observer, the man’s defence Attorney, Jan Peltier, told the court that his client did not intentionally hit the child but only reacted to the blows he received from the minor who was sitting in the back seat while he was driving his car.

The Attorney also suggested that no cutlass had been used and informed the court that his client was remorseful.
