Press Release:–  The Hunter J. Francois Library at the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College will commemorate the 30th anniversary of the death of Sir William Arthur Lewis with the unveiling of the Nobel Laureate ‘Lewis’ Portal.

The launch of the Lewis Portal https://salcc.edu.lc/lewis-portal/ forms part of the UNTHINK Thought Festival.

The Portal will act as a gateway to substantive knowledge and information resources written by and about Sir Arthur Lewis and Sir Derek Walcott in the field of Economics and Literature, respectively.

Visitors to the College’s website and anyone searching for information on Lewis or Walcott will enjoy a ‘One Stop Knowledge and Information Experience’.

The Portal is a globally accessible, virtual space on the College website and is in its early stages of development.

Some portal features include the history and development of the College, bibliographical listings of Lewis’ key publications and other scholarly resources, speeches and lectures, reflections on and critical reviews of his writings.

The Library’s print book collection includes titles such as Labour in the West Indies: the birth of a worker’s movement and Lewis’ 3 volume publication which provides significant insight into his work. The highly acclaimed essay, Economic Development with Unlimited Supplies of Labour can be found in volume 2. Each of these papers will also soon be available via the Library’s digital collections.

Lewis’ historical work and economic theories remain relevant today.

Quite relevant to the post pandemic context is ‘Growth and Fluctuations’ which was first published in 1978. This title is available in hard copy at the Library.

Plans are underway to provide users with access to Lewis’ e-book titles.

SALCC’s academic library continues to provide innovative ways for its users to access information.

The Library boasts an extensive multi-disciplinary scholarly subscription based database providing students and faculty access to just over 210,000 ebooks and thousands of academic journals which feature titles that address issues pertinent to studies of the Caribbean, West Indies, and Latin America.

The development of portals, special libraries and digital collections are ways in which the HJFL has advanced its provision of library services and access to information.

The Hunter J. François Library and Sir Arthur Lewis Community College remain committed to preserving and honoring the heritage of St Lucia, its national heroes, icons and its unique culture.

The legacy of Sir William Arthur Lewis lives on at the Institution which now bears his name – the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (SALCC).

More recently, the development of the Derek Walcott Library by the College, ensures that the legacy of Walcott will be preserved through organized digital and print literary collections.
