Rose Hill fire victim, Omer St Rose, says he was asleep and had to be awakened as a devastating blaze devoured seven wooden houses in the neighbourhood, including his.
St Rose recalled that he went to bed about 11.30 p.m on Old Year’s night.
He told St Lucia Times that after he fell asleep, his sister banged on his house to wake him up.
“When I got up from sleep and I opened my door, I saw that little house that was close to me was already on fire. I reached here and I could not go back and save anything,” St Rose recalled.
He said had he not been awakened he would have been a dead man.
“Imagine – I have my dentures and that burn because I put it in a glass before going to bed,” he told St Lucia Times.
St Rose said he fled his home wearing only a top and underwear.
He explained that a neighbour gave him a pair of short trousers to wear.
“I had everything – imagine I had two amps in there. I had crossover; I had equaliser, I had a mixer; big speakers – everything; $8000 worth of things – all gone.”
St Rose disclosed that he is currently living at his brother and is happy to be alive.
