The Express Balata Rubis Gas Station has been robbed and a fire was set inside the building.
Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Hermina Vitalis, told St Lucia Times that a team member raised the alarm Tuesday morning after encountering difficulty opening up the business place.
“She recognized that the front door, the roller, was not going up and she went to the back to see if there were any issues with the door mechanism and recognised that the door was ajar and there was a hole. So somebody got access, cut off the door, went in, broke the walls and gained access to the interior of the building and we noticed from the fumes coming out that fire was set. The place was on fire and items were taken – the dry goods, all the alcohol and our vault was missing,” Vitalis disclosed.
She said the police and the Saint Lucia Fire Service were alerted and an investigation is underway.
In addition, Vitalis said efforts were being made to keep traumatised staff calm and stable.
“We have not been able to quantify the loss,” she explained.
Nevertheless, Vitalis said that not much cash was taken.
There have been several robberies at the same location, including one in October 2019 during which a security guard was shot dead.
