Attorney Lee Merritt who has represented the family of slain Saint Lucian, Botham Jean, has announced that he is running for Texas attorney general, US media reports say.
According to the reports, Merritt plans to challenge Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton.
“I am running for Attorney General of Texas,” Merritt wrote Saturday on Twitter.
He also declared that Texas deserves an attorney general that will fight for the constitutional rights of all citizens.
The prominent civil rights attorney asserted in a video on Twitter that the man he is seeking to replace is not doing his job.
Merritt’s announcement that he will run prompted several mostly positive Twitter feedback.
“That’s amazing news,” and “Got my vote,” were among them.
Merritt, in addition to representing the family of Botham Jean, has represented the families of other Black people killed by police officers.
Botham Jean died in 2018 after an off duty police officer, Amber Guyger, shot him.
The unarmed 26 year old was in his own apartment at the time.
But Guyger claimed she mistook his apartment for hers and believed he was an intruder.
However a court sentenced her to 10 years in jail for murder and she has filed an appeal.
