Businessman to sue over supplies controversy

Businessman, Thomas Eugene, has vowed to sue over the presence of police, Customs and other officials on his  property yesterday.

The team was accompanied by Economic Development Minister, Guy Joseph.

Joseph said they had gone to the Corinth property to recover supplies that were intended for St Jude Hospital.

However he said there had been ‘resistance’.

A warrant was later obtained and the supplies removed.

Thomas Eugene, who is Managing Director of Flooring Solutions Inc, told the Times in an interview from the United States  where he resides that he intends to litigate the matter to the fullest extent of the law.

He described the situation as being not only preposterous but malicious as well.

“There is absolutely no justification, there is absolutely no truth and there is no basis for this kind of action,” the Businessman asserted.

He told the Times that Guy Joseph and his “army of thugs” had descended on his property to create the impression that materials were hidden somewhere and could not be retrieved unless law enforcers were present.

“I would have thought that in 2016 our police officers would be a bit more responsible. How do you allow a Minister – as far as I am concerned a glorified bus driver, to drag you on someone else’s personal property without a warrant?” An impassioned Eugene stated.

“I said unless you have a warrant or a court order, nobody goes in there!” The Businessman declared.

He explained that as a result, they had to go and obtain a warrant.

Eugene said that Guy Joseph, whom he described as a hoodlum of a Minister, is not above the law.

He told the Times that the Minister left the premises at about 11 O’ clock last night, satisfied that everything they paid for was there and they signed as receiving it before leaving with the supplies.

Eugene said Joseph promised to let one of his surrogates to go on the media today and try to right the wrong.

“This is absolute nonsense,” he observed.

The Managing Director of Flooring Solutions Inc said initially, all he wanted was his outstanding rent from the authorities for storage of the supplies.

But Eugene told the Times that as a result of yesterday’s presence of the police, Customs and others – including Guy Joseph on his property, people in the area are now saying that it was a drug bust.

“My employees are now sufficiently embarrassed, so you will appreciate that the outstanding amount has now gone up – thanks to Guy Joseph,” the Businessman explained.

He would not be drawn on the sum he is seeking in compensation for impugning his character, but said there would be additional legal claims.

Eugene revealed that his company was contracted six years ago under the then United Workers Party (UWP) administration to supply and install the flooring for the new St Jude Hospital.

It was reported that due to delays in the project, Eugene did not get an opportunity to play his part but provided a warehouse service.

Eugene said that he would have never under any circumstances whatsoever, denied the government of Saint Lucia its property which has been in storage for over six years now.

He disclosed that he has continued to send invoices to the government regarding storage of the material.

“I would surprise you to know that I had to walk them through and tell them everything I had in storage,” the Managing Director of Flooring Solutions explained.

He said:

“Why would I not want to give you your material when I was the one who informed you that I was holding your material? Does it make sense?”

Eugene explained that as a result of storing the St Jude Hospital supplies, he was no longer able to  transact business at the Corinth site because there was no space to store anything.
