Castries Business District Due For Major Upgrade

Press Release:– Plans are advancing to enhance parts of Castries through the OECS Regional Tourism Competitiveness Project.

The project, funded by the World Bank, seeks to enhance the competitiveness of tourism in the region by facilitating the movement of tourists between the participating countries using ferries; improving selected tourism sites; and by strengthening the capacity for regional tourism market development.

In Saint Lucia, government has prioritized the Castries City Tourism Product, with targeted investment sites and activities aimed at making downtown Castries more pleasant and attractive to tourists and residents.

As part of the OECS Regional Tourism Competitiveness Project, government intends to implement several investment initiatives to revitalize downtown Castries. These include the pedestrianization of the William Peter Boulevard, enhancing sidewalks, and the upgrade of the Castries Central Market.

The William Peter Boulevard upgrade will add economic value to the area, Project Manager Dr. Lorraine Nicholas said.

Also forming part of the OECS Regional Tourism Competitiveness Project is a Façade Improvement Program for existing small businesses.

Façade improvements are a means of enhancing the economic viability of these businesses, as well as improving the aesthetic image and the attractiveness of the broader Castries Central Business District.

Some USD$15 million has been earmarked for Saint Lucia under the project.

  1. Another good initiative for the Business sector what about the initiatives for the vulnerable people of the country?

    • I think the vulnerable have Koudmen St. Lisi, School books Voucher from SSDF, STEP, Caretakers, Caregivers through SSDF and Min of Health etc. Thing is those activities are always going on and no press release or media event to promote them.

  2. To those who think its for big business men. No ITS FOR THE VENDORS MAINLY. They too form part of the business district. They are the main targets. THE MARKET UPGRADE IS ABOUT VENDORS. THE PEDESTRIANISATION OF BOULEVARD IS FOR VENDORS AND ENCOURAGE VISITORS TO SPEND MORE. ALL OF THE GOV’T CONCECNTRATION IN THIS OECS PROJECT IS MAINLY ABOUT VENDORS. IMROVING THEIR LIVES. THERE IS EVEN TRAINING FOR THE VENDORS ON CUSTOMER SERVICE.
The ti boutik mentality has to go for ultimate progress

  3. Castries is a loud, filthy, smelly, disgusting dump. Literally a plywood city with ghettos and ti negs on every corner. If you guys wish to make.it more attractive, disband those little blocks with the drug dealing and abuse. Significantly reduce the amount of rum shops and alcohol abusers around the place. The idea of people vending any and everywhere should be replaced with a planned approach. Clean up the smelly drains. Curb the loud music all.over the placr. And those eye sore CDC buildings need a paint job or demolition. Any investor who walks through this pit stop would never put money in this country nor would I advise them to.

    • I strongly agree with you on the CDC Buildings having to go! Imagine all the serious real estate that could exist within Castries Central had those buildings NOT existed. PM, please, could you do something about this? Its really an EYESORE indeed and not good for investment. A huge hotel could even exist where some of those old, worn down buildings now exist. No one wants to invest in Castries! Ghettos now exist within the city’s centre and this should not be. Its because of those CDC Buildings! THERE ARE ALSO PEOPLE WHO LIVE THERE WHO HAVE HOUSES AND LANDS RENTING ELSEWHERE. THEIR MORTGAGES ARE BEING PAID FOR BY TENANTS SPENDING THOUSANDS PER MONTH WHILST THEY PAY BACK GOVERNMENT PEANUTS!!!

      • A big hotel? Current hotels can’t be filled and you think it is a good idea to build a new big one? Is that the only avenue for economic activity here? Hotels and rumshops? And where will you put those thousands of displaced people? On the streets? 90% of CDC residents do not have other residencies despite your claims. Many are low income earners and many are pensioners. Are you going to evict a pensioner who worked for Government their entire lives and receives a $500 monthly pension? Furthermore, have you thought about the economic impact the CDC residents is having in the city? They buy food from restaurants, they patronise the vendors and supermarket, their kids use the schools. If you remove thousands of consumers from an economic area and what do you think will happen? And when the real estate is freed up what will occupy those spots? Have you noticed how many empty units are in Blue Coral mall? How about Baywalk? See how often those units change? Let’s go to the Rodney Bay strip. Again constant business closures. You people are truly myopic and moronic.

It is true that the older buildings need to go. They are unsafe and unsightly. But Castries itself is a filthy mess and a disaster waiting to happen. Considering the City has burned down TWICE, you would think the authorities would be wary about placing plywood structures all over. Wood is a fantastic fuel source for fire last I checked.

Blame the authorities for allowing all those ghettos and mini-ghettos all over the place. Blame the authorities for the haphazard vending because they fear the backlash of removing vendors as it will interfere with someone livelihood. The politicians are to be held accountable and no one else.

      • Dude any and every city worth its salt has a well established residential area. In fact people desire to live in cities for obvious reasons. The most expensive residential properties in the world are in cities confirming that. Go to New York City, London, Moscow, Tokyo and the story is the same. Don’t let this sh!t hole, ghetto of a city, Castries make you think otherwise. You people hire incompetent leaders to run your country. Don’t you expect that incompetence to permeate through all their decisions? They need to clean up this city and plan it better.

  4. The last comment is good but they have to start somewhere Rome didn’t build in an hour stop blaming and stop putting big spoon in you’ll mouths and expect it to go through . all dominoes suffuled together but they don’t slame together idiots.
