Castries businessman Rafael James alias ‘Fie-yo’ was in stable condition in hospital Thursday after masked bandits shot him overnight.

That’s according to family members.

They say that James, 64, was outside his shop at New Village, Castries,  about 7:30 pm playing a game of dominoes with others when three masked men appeared, demanding cash.

“He tried to defend himself,” one New Village resident recalled.

The resident told St Lucia Times that one of the bandits opened fire, hitting the Castries businessman in the leg.

“The bullet passed through the leg,” the resident observed.

It was disclosed that the commotion attracted persons in the neighbourhood, whereupon the bandits fled, empty-handed.

The Saint Lucia Fire Service says it dispatched an ambulance to the scene but when it arrived a private vehicle had already taken the victim to hospital.
