Police have charged a teenager in connection with a Facebook vehicle sale scam, in which vehicles were being advertised and prospective buyers were being ‘lured’ to certain locations where monies would be transferred.

Acting Assistant Police Commissioner with responsibility for Crime Management, George Nicholas, made the disclosure Friday at a news conference.

He told reporters the advertisers would hand buyers a key and tell them that the vehicle can be collected in another location.

However Nicholas said there would be no vehicle.

Nicholas expressed bewilderment as to how individuals could be so gullible.

He said as a result of a police investigation into the matter, eighteen year old Joshua Kaylan Duncan Charles of Bois Patat was among two individuals arrested and charged.

Nicholas stated that the teenager was charged with three counts of obtaining property by deception.

He revealed that on the first count, Charles was bailed in the sum of $3,000 cash or suitable surety and is to report to Central Police station three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Bail pending is pending on the other two counts, reporters were told.

Also charged in connection with the Facebook scam was Brian Justin, 23, of La Pansee.

Justin was charged with 4 counts of obtaining property by deception and is currently on remand at the Bordelais Correctional Facility (BCF), Nicholas told reporters.

The senior police official expressed the view that people are too gullible.

“There’s a saying that Saint Lucians like freeness – we like cheap things and we just have to stop being so gullible,” Nicholas asserted.

“You have not seen the car, you don’t know the individual and yet still you part with your money and lose it in the process,” he observed.

There have been reports that in addition to vehicles, other items have been advertised for sale on Facebook and some buyers have been duped.
