Prime Minister Allen Chastanet has made an appeal to young people involved in gangs, after four people died in two separate incidents involving gun violence.
“ I just want to appeal to young people involved in gangs – Saint Lucia is prospering and there is a better way and a better living,” Chastanet asserted.
On Monday night, there was a double homicide in Dennery.
Daniel Prospere, 19, alias ‘Cesario’ and Thomas Florent, 28, alias ‘Cole’ were gunned down in the village.
Hours earlier on Sunday night, there was also a double homicide – this time at Jacmel.
Jason Polius, 25, and Tysha Raphael, 24 succumbed to gunshot wounds after a drive by shooting.
Raphael was on her way to buy something to eat when she was hit by gunfire.
The PM has expressed sympathy to the young woman’s family.
“It’s a very sad situation in our country,” Chastanet said in a video post on his official Facebook page.
“To have a young person who is innocently shot is something that is horrific and really unacceptable,” he declared.
As a result, Chastanet appealed to gang members to look for a better way to make a contribution to this country.
And he commended the police.
The PM recalled that officers have made several arrests and recently seized guns and ammunition.
He also expressed the view that the new police dogs are doing fantastic work.
“We are continuing to strengthen our police in doing a better job in protecting us,” Chastanet stated.
But the PM said that for young people, there is a better way to move forward.
“And we certainly are appealing to you to embrace the new opportunities that are being created in the country and to stop the unnecessary killing of a young innocent person in the name of Tysha Raphael,” Chastanet stated.
