Chastanet Criticises ‘Heartless’ SLP Over Its Economic Policies

Asserting that his United Workers Party (UWP) administration left a proven track record, opposition leader Allen Chastanet has taken the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) to task over its economic policies.

On Tuesday, in a televised address, the former Saint Lucia Prime Minister declared that the SLP’s recent decisions have disastrous effects.

Chastanet spoke of the government decisions not to subsidise the cost of gas, allowing the prices to increase, the increase in bus fares, doing nothing about the electricity surcharge and not continuing construction projects.

He also accused the SLP of playing politics with Hewanorra International Airport, St Jude Hospital, and investors.

“These choices are having a serious knockdown effect to the current state of our economy and to the more vulnerable in our society,” the UWP leader declared.

“While it is clearly in any Government’s purview to change policy, at least change it for the better, instead this heartless administration is raising havoc within households and the business community,” he told his audience.

And the UWP leader questioned how a person earning $1200 would survive with no change in wages.

“If this were a Government that truly puts people first and empathises with people, then how can these policies be justified?” The former PM said.

“Saint Lucia, the day is going to come where all of us, civil society and individuals, are going to have to let our voices be heard,” Chastanet declared.

“The people of Ukraine are literally dying for their independence. It reminds us that we need to appreciate and treasure the freedoms and democracy we have and no longer remain silent,” the UWP leader noted.

“The time will come where we will have to unite as freedom fighters to remind the Government that the people’s parliament will not be silenced,” Chastanet observed.

“Our voices need to be heard before it’s too late,” he stated.

  1. If anything, SLP has made the cost of living far cheaper and far more affordable. 1200 is too much for the average lucian, we do not need your assistance chas.

We do not mind inflation, our pm has told us to be more creative like bananas and banana bread. We do not mind more money for gas, let them raise it even higher because at the end of the day, we do not need you running the country! Just because it was more affordable when you were in power doesn’t mean you should lead.

It’s not all about the money it’s about setting an example, let them raise prices as much as they want we will survive. Slp does these things for a reason, we want it their way not your way

    • Did you proofread what you just wrote there? I understand now why some of us like misery so dam much and the waste that comes from our derere is better than the brains that are in our skull

  2. WOW!! Interesting what losing can do to one’s personality. Maybe you would not be making these statements and accusations if you had just for once, listen to the voice of the people, when you had the opportunity.

  3. Let me say to the naysayers that politics is a necessary evil. You may have no interest but it will always exist and there is nothing you can do about it. Put three people together they will automatically form a political group. It is futile and immature not to participate in politics because someone will always decide your fate. If you are not at the table you will be on the menu. Take your pick.
Chastanet is only bloviating. He is a sore loser. He didn’t expect his political power to erode so quickly. The political reality looks bleak but we are a resilient people. The economic crisis facing us today isn’t unique to St. Lucia. With careful planning and the political will to succeed we will be victorious.
Yes, we are a divided nation, but we don’t need to be a nation engulfed in lies, lawlessness, and demagogic incitement. The 2021 election is proof that political mediocrity isn’t tolerated in this nation. If you cannot perform as a government then you will soon be in opposition. We have no tolerance for poor performance.
Chastanet on the other hand isn’t bringing any substance to the political discourse. With all due respect, he is a pathological liar. You cannot argue with people who have their own separate made-up set of facts. You cannot have an argument with people who are deranged by the euphoric rage of narcissism. It is narcissistic self-idolatry to think you can create your own truth based on what you feel.

  5. Politics is all gamesmanship for these two supremely unqualified leaders, Chastanet and Pierre. Having to choose these two political parties is the same as trying to choose your method of death sentence, firing squad or electric chair. Both are equally bad.

Chastanet should bow out of politics with immediacy. His party has no chance of returning to power with he at the helm. Pierre isn’t ready for leadership. With him, the tail wags the dog. The Land Rover corrupt case is a clear confirmation of this.

The ordinaary St. Lucians are the big losers with these two buffoons at the apex of politics in the country. The present situation can be likened to giving someone the option of swimming through a crocodile infested river or climbing out a den populated with many hungry lions in order to pass a test of survival.

  6. I have said it over and over all politicians are the same. When they are in office the act the same when they are in opposition they act the same. We are on our own. They don’t care about the lower class. If you want to be the most selfish person that someone can come across is become a politicians. During campaign they will go down to yr level even sell their soul to u if they have to. They become the most caring I dividual one can know and after election and they get what they want they make the comments who are you. Recently one party hack said to me after I told him many people will not vote next election. The man had the guts to tell me it’s not time yet. Lucian love politics and the time of politics they will still come out and will still vote. Wake up my people and let us show them that we are not a bunch of jackasses that they take us to be. It means they can do anything and be treated anyway and they will still get away with it to vote and support them when election comes around. I urge us all to come together in the next 5 years and let’s create history in the political arena. We will vote for Jesus and not politicians. We need a proper hospital in the south. Politicians are playing with our lives but god will render to them what is due to them. Slp/ uwp are from the same root. There will come a time when both sides will have no voice to shout. Peace and love

  7. Both parties playing the blame game. Lucians wake the freak up. No political shenanigans and the people that already doh have are the ones feeling the struggles most. 5 yrs past rebuild the damn hospital. Since what day WASCO dredging the dam.
Watch how the Victoria hospotsl got a new facelook because of covid 19.
Like we say thats bagay goverment. I’ll continue sipping on my tea. Cintinue playing with phillip n Chastene.

  8. Oh Chas I support you 100%, but can you answer these questions.
    1. Did you sign the gas document you had on your desk?
    2. Have you received the 7 million dollars you gave for no vaccine?
    3. What project did you complete with the 600 million dollars you borrowed over the 5 years?
    4. Did you recover any of the money you gave to CHITTI?
Shame on you to talk when you know you didn’t achieve anything for your 5 years.
