Prime Minister Allen Chastanet held wide-ranging talks Friday morning with the new President of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB).

Saint Lucian Dr. Hyginus ‘Gene’ Leon took over as President of the bank earlier this month.

Prime Minister Chastanet disclosed that he and the new CDB boss discussed the economic status of small island developing states.

They also spoke about the impact of Covid-19, recovery efforts, concessional funding, managing debt, unique vulnerabilities, innovation and building resilience.

And During their virtual meeting, the two men discussed improving engagement, communication and assistance to small businesses through the establishment of an equity fund and other means of support.

“I am so encouraged by our discussion and by the ideas and initiatives proposed by Dr. Leon as he committed to the CDB having a meaningful impact,” Chastanet wrote on his official Facebook page.

“We are so proud to have Saint Lucian Dr. Hyginus “Gene” Leon as the new Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) president,” the PM stated.

Leon is the sixth chief executive of the regional multilateral institution.

Chastanet described Leon’s position as noteworthy.

He recalled that he is the second Saint Lucian to assume leadership of the CDB over the bank’s 50 years of existence.

The other was Nobel Laureate Sir William Arthur Lewis.

Lewis served as the bank’s first President.
