United Workers Party (UWP) leader and former Prime Minister, Allen Chastanet, Thursday announced that he is both proud and humbled by the opportunity given to him to continue to serve the people of Saint Lucia, albeit in a new capacity as Leader of the Opposition.
“We will support the Government when they do well, however, we will be vigilant and hold them always accountable on the issues and the promises they have made. Although we only have two representatives in the Lower House of Parliament, we are fortified by the fact that our Party received over 37,400 votes which is more than the previous opposition received with six members,” Chastanet wrote on his official Facebook page.
“We will do our utmost to serve them and all Saint Lucians as we continue to work towards a prosperous Saint Lucia for all,” the former Prime Minister stated.
Chastanet’s party suffered a crushing defeat at the July 26, 2021 general elections, losing nine of the 11 seats it won at the 2016 polls.
The Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) won 13 seats, while independents Richard Frederick and Stephenson King won in Castries Central and Castries North.
