Chastanet Says CARICOM Is Not Working

Former Saint Lucia Prime Minister Allen Chastanet has revealed that he had a very frank discussion with the visiting Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Dr. Carla Barnett.

” CARICOM is not working and I was very honest with her that as a Prime Minister I was spending less and less time in CARICOM and more and more time at the OECS level,” Chastanet told reporters on Wednesday.

Regional leaders who met virtually in a Special Session on Tuesday, May 11, unanimously agreed to appoint the Belize national as the 8th CARICOM Secretary-General.

She assumed office on August 15, 2021.

Currently, the opposition leader, Chastanet, recalled that Barnett’s appointment came during his tenure as Prime Minister.

“The goal was to hope to rebuild our strength in CARICOM,” the Micoud South MP and the United Workers Party leader explained.

He later wrote on his official Facebook page that he was impressed with the vision and passion which Dr. Barnett has for the Caribbean Community and wished her and her team the greatest success during her tenure.

But in telling reporters that CARICOM was not working, Chastanet called attention to the organisation’s ability to make timely decisions.

He disclosed that the issue grappled with the most was the matter of sovereignty.

“Is sovereignty so important that it will overcome efficiency? And then if you are not efficient, then you don’t have money to be able to do what you want so therefore you argue that you don’t have sovereignty. So the question is – the world sees us as one at the CARICOM level. We saw that with the banks – the banks think of CARICOM as one singular balance sheet,” Chastanet asserted.

But he lamented that the regional body does not act like one.

The former Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister reiterated his concern about civil aviation, noting that there’s one civil aviation authority in Central America but seven in CARICOM.

According to the former Prime Minister, an airline wanting to do business in the region would have to submit different reports.

“This is crazy, and when you are talking about we don’t have enough money even to do basic things, then we need to find more efficient ways to do other things, and that’s the trade-off with sovereignty,” he declared.

  1. Typical Lucians, blasting Chastanet but not taking time to read the substance of his message. How could Chastanet fix Caricom when Trinidad and Jamaica don’t really care about the community. Look at what’s happening with the Commonwealth vote. Caricom agrees to support the Baronness but then Jamaica goes and nominates it’s Foreign minister. If they can’t agree on something so basic how can caricom work for us. But I guess the Labour hacks prefer to focus on Chastanet than the real issues as usual smh

  2. Just do not know what people see in Mr Chastanet why you did not make it work when you were given power by the fools who voted for you after you were not even born here

  3. Where is the lie? OECS is functional. But greater caricom … apart from CXC … what’s really functional in CARICOM? Try travelling to Trinidad, Jamaica, Bahamas to live and work … I guarantee .. the mere cost of flying to these CARICOM states would be a deterrent.

Further CARICOM secretariat is financed by the member countries. When was the last time we got something substantial and actionable from CARICOM. Just another layer of public servants overpaid to do God knows what.

Alot of you read the heading and not the substance And come spew $**!

  4. I will refrain from using emotive language however I would say that Mr. Chastanet is enthralled by geriatric ideas; a former prime minister bereft of fresh ideas. His accomplishments are hard to find. a mishandled pandemic, a failed tax cut that never delivered the promised investment boom yet he has the gull to say that Caricom isn’t working. Mr. Chastanet, a nassacistic demagogue, thinks he is the only one who is equipped to solve our economic problems but has failed miserably in his 5 years at the helm. Rather than providing more oomph to the weak economy he threatened to raise taxes on charcoal makers; small motel owners and even the informal economy. How much imperfection are we willing to accept from Mr. Chastanet?

  5. Curious statement by the LOO. Brings to mind when Trump said that NATO was not working. Chastanet, has made similar statements during his term in office.

  6. So many ingredients in this Salad; the taste is good to some, others require a bit of Salt, Lima and Venezuela don’t mix; Chas says his bit, now what do Todays’ Lucia say?

  7. So thats why you went ahead and basically ruined st lucias spot on the regional scale? Completely failing at keeping st lucia the head of the oecs and almost ruining our spot within the oecs?

  8. I agree with Chas 🤷 that caricom is not working. It’s a joke! However, this idiot Chas didn’t make it any better. He went ahead and joined the Lima group, whose intent was to overthrow the government of Venezuela. This went against all the conventions of Caricom.

    • Chastanet pretends that his disregard for CARICOM while in office (3 Blind Mice vs Venezuela) may have been a contributing factor to his warped perception that the organization is “not working.” So Chas your put-down of CARICOM in the presence of the Secretary General, will mostly be considered an insult by the heads of the other members…especially Belize; because even if some of them may agree with you; that was neither the occasion upon which, nor the forum whereupon and the personage to whom, you should have made your remark. Consider the hurt feeling the Sec. General by the look on her face, for indeed, “A picture speaks a Thousand Words.”

Chastanet had every opportunity ti state his feelings while he was a Head of State.

Chastanet’s statement about sovereignity is another example of why he should never be allowed to hold the leadership of any political party, much less of the fair State of Saint Lucia. Consider his gaff about colonialism having a conscience and the other about transparency being a hindrance to development.

Do NOT insult Chastanet…rather dismantle his utterances to reveal ; “The Leader of The Opposition Allen Chastanet, Has No Clothes.”

      • The problem with Mr. Chastanet is that he is a quintessential mediocre white man who feels that he is entitled to the highest office of the land. He will stop at nothing because he is a narcissistic demagogue and a relatively wealthy carpetbagger. The man is stunningly ignorant.
