Chastanet Speaks On Racism And Politics

Opposition leader Allen Chastanet has asserted that racism plays a part worldwide, especially in politics.

As far as he is concerned, people use racism as a ‘last card’ to bring emotions into a debate when evidence is lacking to justify a particular position.

He made the remarks in invited comments concerning racism and politics in Saint Lucia.

“Racism in Saint Lucia is not new, racism globally, sadly, is not new and the world is trying to address these issues. We have seen a lot of movements recently to bring that about,” the former Prime Minister observed.

“Race has been applied on both sides. It’s not right. It divides the country, but at the end of the day I am proud of my own personal heritage here in Saint Lucia,” Chastanet stated.

“My grandparents, my family members, we have all been Saint Lucians, we are Saint Lucians and more importantly I certainly come from a mixed race and I am proud of my history. I have never run away from my history. I am proud to talk about it and embrace it as part of who I am,” the Micoud South MP stated.

After his July 26, 2021 election defeat, Chastanet indicated that the Black Lives Matter Movement here was among the contributors to the loss; however, he described the movement as a very important one.

But he explained that, like many other movements, sometimes outside forces exert an influence.

“I think that leading up to the elections, the labour party did use the Black Lives Matter Movement and influenced it for politics,” the United Workers Party (UWP) leader told St Lucia Times.

“The narrative that Allen Chastanet was a foreigner in the country, I look like a foreigner, I speak like a foreigner and I am different to everybody else, certainly was something applied to undermine my character and I think there are no two ways about it. But I don’t think that by itself it influenced the outcome of the elections,” he expressed.

But he said the issue played a part.

Nevertheless, Chastanet declared that he and the members of his party take responsibility for their election loss.

“You look at the situation where you had COVID and COVID was dealing with confinement and then you had Black Lives Matter which was speaking about freedom. So a simple thing where you take a slogan that ‘I can’t breathe’ which was a black man who was pinned against the ground and killed. But you make that come across as COVID was attempting to do the same thing and the person that was the imposer of the restrictions of COVID was Allen Chastanet and so therefore that’s the inference that was being made all along,” the former PM noted.

However, Chastanet said his administration at the time applied the protocols because they represented the best practices to save lives.

In this regard, he declared that the protocols had nothing to do with restricting the movement of people or racism.

“But cleverly, the labour party was able to merge those two issues as being the same,” Chastanet observed.

And he admitted that he and his party did not do a good enough job of pushing back on those issues and causing people to see the ‘full story’.

According to Chastanet, the genius of the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) campaign was its half-truths.

  1. Chestanet is in no position to say what is necessary to say about race and what isn’t his family may have been in Saint Lucia for many generations but they came there as what and for what People need to understand that the person representing your country should that lease their slight resemblance to the vast majority of the population of that said country, I don’t know why the note St Lucian’s are walking into indentured labor with their eyes wide open

  2. @maneater you and your Uncle Tom House Negro Mentality. “80% of it’s Black Population is mixed” this equates to what I hate myself in the mirror fool ?? Let me guess….we are not Black because we are “mixed” right UNCLE TOM ?? The elements of your kind are still around with your Classist and Racist mentality in St Lucia in the year O Lord 2022. You must have been a piece of work in your hay day. Well let me educate you White + Brown = Gray, so since there are no Gray People on the earth you are either Black or White and St Lucia is not a “white country”, it’s not a Malatto/Shabbin Country” St Lucia is a Black Country, with plenty of massa’s like yourself still around.. In retrospect to BLM I am proud member and just like a Chevrolet they are built in America, but can be found world wide.

    • Just for the record BLM is a brainwashing movement… which you are. However St Lucia is a black country the majority are, but I don’t believe you live in St Lucia by describing the comments you put on here. I heard you are a woman that was living Jacmel then you moved to England.

  3. @ Realist Yes, Yes, yes, BUT IF I MAY here is the same man who is talking about he is not racist but fail ,to denounced your family past atrocities against Afro St Lucinas of which they have ENSLAVED and built The Chastanet Empire on of which you henerit Grasshopper. We you not the same PM who used demeaning overtures to describe our Black St Lucian Women from a foreign soil ?? Yes he did….how soon we forget but not Highgrade.. Fast forward decades later you blatantly imposed you economic racisim on poor St Lucins of the lower economic demographics with your monopolistic raine on grocery import to St Lucia for decades and imposing inflated prices at your own governance, in earnest mirroring those in you family tree…it’s in your DNA..

  4. Chastanet has once again demonstrated how wrongheaded and naïve he is even about race matters. The problem is not solely racism but white supremacy. Racism like white supremacy is ubiquitous. Chastanet never mentioned that he was able to ascend to the helm of St. Lucia’s politics in a relatively short period of time simply because of his pigmentation. He has benefited from white supremacy and his skin color. His claim to being of mixed race is farcical. If he walks the streets of London, New York, or Berlin nobody would question his ethnicity or racial classification. He would enjoy the privileges of those cities without any hesitation.

If Chastanet wants to be technical about his ethnicity it is safe to say that he is a quadroon, that is, a person who is one-quarter black. In any event, race, as a word, magically disappeared from his rhetorical repertoire when he was the prime minister but now as a broken and defeated politician, it has reemerged. You cannot have it both ways. A society is either racist or not but it cannot be both.

  5. What’s this nonsense about black, white, shabeen and coolie you all talking about? in my opinion no one in St. Lucia is pure one race or another, every body is mixed, except a remnant perhaps of very old white folks of French leftovers. The Chastanets are not pure white, and even though, they have as much right as native St. Lucians in our politics, in our government, our commerce, as our representative, in our banks, as our Prime Minister, Doctor, Lawyer and you name it. The father, Michael had a sailing boat – the “Michael David” – named after himself and his brother Dr. David Chastanet; Michael worked his azz out to make a living, and that he did – Boating – now thats had work, I couldn’t and I wouldn’t want to do it, not too many black men would want to do it, just too hard. Winning or Losing an election in St. Lucia comes with many factors; ask the people of Soufriere (a study in psychological confusion) if you can solve it, please let me know!!!!
Now, go have a drink, I’ll have a cup of Tea, leave politics alone, St. Lucia is too divided by Banners of Red & Yellow – don”t bring race into it, leave that to the ‘Barron’ the lowest of the denomination was applied to gain an advantage – and so they did and gave birth to an ‘Unholy alliance’ so deal with that. CRIME, CRIME & MORE CRIME is the order of the day, but will SLP talk about that???
Very early this morning, as always, I called unto the Almighty to heal, change hearts, grant wisdom do a miracle for us because He said “without me, you can do nothing” now you do your bit Lucians

  6. Guess it was not racism when you won the election. So you just showed us an example by politicking and racism right there .

  7. Wait, Saint Lucia really has a Black Lives Matter movement? I thought it was just an immitation. Why do we have a Black Lives Matter / False Black Power movement. Havent we learned how Americans both black and white have been brainwashed?

Why are we duplicating anything from American culture when our story is completely different?

Furthermore St Lucia is a country where 80% of it’s black population is mixed although they Identify as black. There aren’t many pure bred Blacks in St. Lucia, only in St. Kitts, Barbados, Antigua, Anguilla and Jamaica.

  8. ‘Undercover’ I am of the opinion that PM Pierre is waiting for the money that was given to CHTTI, the 7 million for the vaccine, the millions that disappeared from the treasury and went to forestierre about St. Jude’s. After all these Pierre will talk.

    • Then i guess Pierre is still not PM as yet then since he can’t talk. I heard 7 million was returned someone correct me if i’m wrong

      • Bolo Byron I’ve heard that for years now coming from the SLP. King, Mondesir, Chastenet, Frederick, Spider and the main one Guy were all supposed to be in prison after ,2011 elections. To date we have seen no such thing instead King and Frederick are now THEM. Maybe soon Mondesir and some others might be THEM too. Five years will come and go and no one will be held accountable cause Helaire, Alva, Shawn, Richard and the likes have to get rich fast on our money and will hope to walk Free.

  9. I wonder what pm Pierre is doing about crime, gas and taxes… At least Chastanet apologised for his wrong doings however Pierre is taking no resposibilties and allowing ministers to hoard our taxes like Hilaire. Some of our fuel have raised more and crime is worst than ever. I hope you are proud of SLP and their cabals of liars and theives

  10. They criticized Chastanet on his color. They called him a white man like he has no business being in St Lucia politics. A country ruled by Europeans ( the white people) fought by French & British ( white people) ruled by a white queen. Yet they do not have any resources and depend on the so called white men and women to invest in St Lucia, and vacation on here. I do not like that racism is in St Lucia politics.

  11. Racism, it is happening full force on our land, taxes check our statuses here right now and worse ever, crime is ravaging fair Helen like tsunami, no jobs for the people of St.lucia. People are suffering more than ever no sugar flour rice just wait for more it’s coming health care is crippling on our a****. Politicians are destroying each other in the house with no regards to the youth that is digesting what’s taking place and the list goes on. When will the opposition start to work for us to see a change in fair Helen and stop the blame game and pic a boo and the fairy tales. I just want a change and to see progress in the land. I know some will come for me but I am a concern citizen and I am suffering too. So help me God.

  13. If this is what Chastanet learned after six months on reflecting on his party’s crushing defeat in the last election. He hasn’t learned anything at all, he takes no responsibility for the several demeaning comments towards the public he uttered during his tenure. He takes no fault for failing to deliver election promises about crime, gas and taxes. He hasn’t learned anything from this humiliating election loss
