Prime Minister Allen Chastanet says Saint Lucians cannot allow COVID-19 to define them.
Chastanet asserted that he, his cabinet, many government officials and people in the private sector share those sentiments.
He made the remarks Thursday while urging people not to panic.
Chastanet was one of the guests on the National Television Network (NTN).
He and other officials were updating the nation regarding the Island’s COVID-19 situation.
“We cannot allow COVID to define us as Saint Lucians,” he declared.
“But we, as Saint Lucia, must define COVID,” the PM stated.
As a result, he urged his countrymen to rise to the challenge of overcoming what he described as ‘this scourge’ on the world and Saint Lucia.
Chastanet declared that he has and continues to have the greatest confidence in the Chief Medical Officer.
He also expressed confidence in the Minister of Health, her team and officials responsible for implementing COVID-19 protocols.
“Protocols work,” he explained.
However, Chastanet pointed out that what’s missing is full application.
“Every single time we see that we have lapsed, we have had an outbreak,” the PM noted.
Nevertheless, he said he was glad to see that Saint Lucians are not panicking.
“And there’s no need to panic, Saint Lucia,” he advised.
“We just need to wear our masks, practice social distancing, continue to hand sanitise and make sure that everyone around us is doing the same thing,” Chastanet stated.
He noted that although too many frontliners are putting themselves at risk, people are not adhering to the protocols.
