Chief Medical Officer Dr. Sharon Belmar George Tuesday warned that Saint Lucia could end up seeing a major outbreak of COVID-19, similar to what other countries are experiencing.

“We note in our epic-curve previously we were managing with a rate of transmission of 1.1,” she disclosed.

But Belmar-George explained that the rate has risen to 1.54.

“We see the upward trend toward a fourth wave in country,” the CMO asserted.

And she stated that this country is at a very critical point.

“We want to ensure that everyone is aware of where we are,” she told a news briefing aired by the National Television Network (NTN).

“And our actions at this point are really going to determine how we continue to manage,” the CMO said.

“We can end up getting to a major outbreak as we are seeing happening in the rest of the world,” she observed.

National Epidemiologist Dr. Michelle Francois who also spoke, said over the past few weeks there had been a plateau in the number of cases.

However, she revealed that as of May 14, the numbers have been rising.

Francois said with variants circulating in the region and globally, health officials are concerned.

Referring to the national analysis, she told NTN that to date, Saint Lucia has had 4, 871 cases.

And over the last 28 days, the country recorded 414 cases.

Citing other figures, Francois declared that Saint Lucia is not moving in the correct direction.

In this regard, she spoke of the need for people to adhere to protocols and public health measures.
