Antigua Observer:-The police corporal who allegedly kidnapped and raped a 13-year-old girl has been remanded to prison after he was refused bail at his first appearance before Chief Magistrate Joanne Walsh yesterday morning.

The officer whose name must be withheld unless he’s convicted, will be kept in custody at Police Headquarters on American Road, which has rooms designated for prisoners who are to be kept under guard.

The junior-ranked policeman with over a decade of service in the Royal Police Force of Antigua & Barbuda (RPFAB) was not required to enter a plea to any of the three charges which, according to his lawyer John Fuller, are kidnapping, rape and unlawful carnal knowledge.

Both charges of unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl under 14 years and rape carry a maximum penalty of life in prison.

According to the complainant, the offences occurred between July and September this year. Since the allegations are for indictable offences that can only be tried in the High Court, the cop has to face committal proceedings.
