Cornerstone Gets Financial Assistance

Prime Minister, Allen Chastanet, Wednesday presented a cheque in the sum of nearly $7,000 to Cornerstone Humanitarian Society.

The society’s administrator, Desmond Phillip, received the cheque on behalf of the organisation which provides food, shelter and support to the homeless.

“I have the greatest amount of respect and admiration for persons who volunteer their time and effort to assist the most vulnerable in society,” Prime Minister Chastanet wrote on his official Facebook page.

Cornerstone Humanitarian Society was established in 1998.

It currently provides food and shelter to 35 formerly homeless persons at its headquarters at Vigie, Castries, which has a capacity to accommodate 40 individuals.

The organisation gets a subvention from the government and counts on other financial support from private individuals and oganisations.

It currently employs five members of staff.

  1. Why is it the PM and not the the Minister of Social Justice (Hon. Spider Montoute) making this donation on behalf of the Government. Is it being done by the PM in his personal capacity or is the PM using public funds in attempting to make political mileage to improve his more recent unpopular image.

    • This news item was badly written, but if you look at the cheque you will realise that it is from the Office of the Prime Minister. Further down you will notice it was from “proceeds from Prime Minister’s Independence Ball…”. Hence the reason why the cheque was presented by the PM. I hope this answers your question.
