Tourism Minister, Dr. Ernest Hilaire, has expressed concern over Saint Lucia being put on the ‘Very High’ travel risk list of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),which recommends that people avoid travelling to destinations on that list and if they do, they should be fully vaccinated.
“You always have concerns when the advisories against the country are issued,” Hilaire, whose responsibilities also include Investment, Creative Industries, Culture and Information, told reporters on Tuesday.
“But we are working very steadfastly to control the numbers and bring them down to acceptable levels. I think we will have to learn as a country, as a world, to live with COVID and the different variants that seem to be emerging,” the Castries South MP asserted.
“We are working very hard and it is always a concern when somebody dies, when advisories and other situations with COVID arise,” he said.
The CDC on Monday moved this country from Level 3 – ‘High Risk’ to Level 4 ‘Very High’ risk, asserting that because of the current situation in Saint Lucia, even fully vaccinated travellers may be at risk for getting and spreading COVID-19 variants.
The CDC’s travel notices range from Level 1 (“low”) to Level 4 (“very high”).
