The Director of the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) has highlighted the need for effective leadership amid the current COVID-19 pandemic, as cases continue to rise in all sub-regions except North America.

“This pandemic has taught us time and again that leadership determines the effectiveness of a country’s response,” Dr. Carissa F. Etienne says.

She made the remarks during her weekly press briefing.

“Sadly, across our region we’ve seen misinformation about COVID-19,” Etienne lamented.

As a result, she noted that this has sown doubt on proven health measures, often in the context of political disputes.

“By stoking controversy where there is none, our leaders are sending mixed messages to the public,” the PAHO Director asserted.

Therefore, she declared that they are standing in a way of effective measures to control the virus.

“We must unite around stopping this virus – and this should be the priority,” Etienne stated.

She also stressed that effective vaccines are a beacon of hope in the COVID-19 crisis.

“We must do all in our power to secure more doses for all nations in the Americas,” Etienne observed.

But she noted that the region is very far from that goal.

Nevertheless, she expressed the view that regional solidarity, including the donation of doses, will be key to  getting through the current shortage of supply.
