Young offenders should be kept away from ‘hardcore’ criminals, National Security Minister, Hermangild Francis has said.

Francis, a former Deputy Police Commissioner, told reporters yesterday that under the law, young persons who commit crimes can be charged as adults.

“But ideally it shouldn’t be that,” he told reporters.

“Again, where do you put juveniles who have committed serious crimes like murder?” Francis said.

He asserted that a new Boys Training Centre should have a means to  keep such offenders away from other young males who are at the institution for their own safety as a result of their parents not being able to take care of them.

“You arrest a guy for two joints and you send him to the university at Bordelais, so when he comes out he will not only be smoking marijuana, he will be doing something else, so that’s what you are trying to prevent – keep these young people away from hardcore criminals,” the minister declared.
