CYEN to observe Earth Hour 2017

Press Release:-The Caribbean Youth Environment Network is a non-profit, civil society, charitable body that focuses its resources on empowering young people and their communities to develop programmes/actions to address socio-economic and environmental issues. The CYEN programme aims at addressing issues such as poverty alleviation and youth employment, health and HIV/AIDS, climatic changes and global warming, impact of natural disasters/hazards, improvement in potable water, conservation and waste management and other natural resource management issues.

CYEN in Saint Lucia will be commemorating Earth Hour 2017- ‘Shine a Light on Climate Action’, to be held on Saturday, 25th March 2017. To kick-start and renew the  climate action charge for Saint Lucia, Earth Hour 2017- ‘Shine a Light on Climate Action’ is one of five scheduled events on  CYEN- in Saint Lucia calendar of activities for year 2017. The event in Saint Lucia seeks to ‘shine a light on’ our oceans and its importance to life in Saint Lucia.

Earth Hour is a worldwide global environmental grassroots movement for solidarity of climate action of the planet organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The event is held annually encouraging individuals, communities, households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. towards the end of March, as a symbol for their commitment to the planet.

It famously started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia in 2007. Since then it has grown to engage more than 7000 cities and towns worldwide to take tangible climate action. Today, Earth Hour engages a massive mainstream community on a broad range of environmental issues. The one-hour event continues to remain the key driver of the now larger movement and continues to harness the collective power of its millions of supporters to shine a light on climate action and the power of the individual to stand united in our ambition to change climate change.

To commemorate Earth Hour 2017- ‘Shine a Light on Climate Action’,  CYEN- in Saint Lucia has decided to host a series of activities leading up to the climate action event. We would like to sensitize students about climate change  through an essay competition for sixth grade primary school students and video competition for secondary school students centred around shining a light on our oceans. Submissions for the schools competition are now open till  March 17, 2017. We hope to culminate with a climate action activity of song, poetry and dance on Saturday 25th March, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 pm at the Derek Walcott Square.

CYEN in Saint Lucia is soliciting your assistance and participation for full engagement, support and any sponsorship which would be critical in championing the success of this endeavour and by extension empowering others through solidarity to ‘Shine a Light on Climate Action in Saint Lucia’.
