Daren Sammy sends message to youth in crisis

Former West Indies T20 Captain, Daren Sammy, has told young people in crisis that their current position in life is not their final destination.

Sammy and his wife, Cathy, were guests on the DBS Television programme – Newsmaker Live, on Wednesday.

He was responding to a question asked by programme host – Journalist, Timothy Poleon.

“You can do something with yourself,” was Sammy’s message to young people.

He asserted that young people can become anything they choose, but he explained that this would not happen without opportunities being opened.

“You need the guidance- you need the leadership,” Sammy explained.

Observing that he was speaking from experience, he recalled that he had worked hard but could have fallen by the wayside had it not been for people in authority who paid attention and helped to make a difference.

“They paid attention to me and said ‘this kid has something to offer'” Sammy recounted.

He asserted that there was need to create avenues where young people can express themselves.

“It does not have to be on the block,” Sammy declared.

He disclosed that he sees people with whom he attended school still being unemployed with  families to feed but not having opportunities.

“Even sometimes those who make it at the educational level and get the qualifications, there are still no jobs for them,”  Sammy told Newsmaker Live host, Timothy Poleon.

He said there was need for young people to”believe more”and try to do something with their lives.

At the same time Sammy highlighted the need for people in authority to help the youth achieve their goals.

Sammy recently launched the Daren Sammy Foundation which seeks to make a difference in the lives  underprivileged athletes through donations from private and corporate citizens.

The foundation’s aim is to support youth development through sports, the provision of education and sporting supplies and the development of mentoring programmes for budding champions.
