A 12-year old from Dennery was swept out to sea in a freak accident Monday morning, according to residents of the community, parts of which have been under water due to heavy rainfall.
The Saint Lucia Fire Service (SLFS) says officers from the Dennery Fire station responded to a report about 11:47 am that the boy had been swept down to the sea by surging flood waters.
One Dennery resident said the child was by his home, standing near a drain with fast flowing water, when the incident occurred.
The resident said the surging water carried the boy some 200 yards away.
A fire service official told St Lucia Times that while being swept away, the child suffered abrasions about the body and his left eye “came out of the orbit.”
“He was rescued, treated and transported to the Dennery polyclinic in a stable condition,” the official disclosed.
