Dennery police investigating a report of gunshots on Sunday night, took a young man into their custody for his own safety.

That’s according to a law enforcement official.

The official said residents of Dennery village reported hearing gunshots and when the police went to investigate, they discovered that gunmen had fired at a young man who sought refuge in someone’s home.

As a result, the police took him into their custody and kept him at the Dennery station.

“We wanted to prevent another homicide,” a law enforcement official familiar with the case said.

But officers later released the youth, who appeared to be in his twenties.

They said they could not keep him at the station because they ‘had nothing on him.’

Police said the young man told investigators he did not know who shot at him.
