The St Lucia Fisherfolk Society Ltd and its member cooperatives have launched a cleanup campaign of several fish landing sites around the island.

The objective of the campaign which commenced on Friday and leads up to Fishermen’s Day on Tuesday, June 29, 2021, is to engender a more proactive approach to garbage disposal and management among fishers and members of the public, organisers of the cleanup say.

According to Operations Manager of the Goodwill Fishermen’s Co-operative of Vieux-Fort, Kaygianna Charlery, the initiative also seeks to  remind fishers and the general public of the importance of observing sanitary measures while observing protocols to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are encouraging persons to keep up and keep clean. The benefit of that is an obvious enhancement of the environment,” Charlery explained, adding that the waterways would also be cleaner.

She said additional garbage bins are being placed at some of the fish landing sites.

“We are encouraging people to use them and dispose of their garbage properly,” she stated.
