Former Antigua & Barbuda Prime Minister, Sir Lester Bird, died Monday morning about six O’ clock, it has been announced.
“Please be advised that Antigua and Barbuda has lost one of its most distinguished and heroic sons. The Honourable Sir Lester Bird, National Hero and Former Prime Minister, has died,” a post on the official Facebook page of the office of Antigua & Barbuda’s Prime Minister said.
According to the post, the acting Prime Minister, in consultation with the Prime Minister who returns to the state today, has ordered that all flags be flown at half mast, beginning immediately, and that planning commence for a State Funeral at an agreed-upon date.
Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister, Gaston Browne, who has been vacationing in Saint Lucia with his family, has expressed condolences on the death of Sir Lester.
“Sincerest condolences to the family of our National Hero, Sir Lester, who transitioned to the great beyond earlier this morning. Sir Lester was a great son of the soil, who contributed significantly to the socio-economic development of our nation,” Browne wrote on Facebook.
Sir Lester Bird was the second Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda from 1994 to 2004.
