Former Security Minister Backs ‘Substantial’ Compensation For Informants

Former Saint Lucia National Security Minister, Doctor Keith Mondesir, is backing a plan announced last week by the current National Security Minister, Hermangild Francis, to compensate informants.

Mondesir believes the cash  for ‘correct’ information should be substantial.

“I am going to roll out a plan – we want the informants, persons who know people who have firearms; give that information to the Commissioner of Police or to myself as the minister and we are going to compensate them when those firearms are found,” National Security Minister, Hermangild Francis, had said last week.

Doctor Keith Mondesir described the plan as a step in the right direction in the fight against crime.

“Information can lead to a lot of cases being solved,” the former minister told St Lucia Times.

He expressed the hope that informants would be paid a ‘substantial amount’ for ‘correct information.’

But Mondesir explained that more is needed.

“You need to look at the social aspect that’s creating the problem and you need to look at your youth very closely,” Mondesir told St Lucia Times.

He expressed the view that young people are responsible for most of the crimes.

“You need to look at the youth situation in Saint Lucia,” Mondesir stated.
