Sky News:-Former TV weatherman Fred Talbot has been sentenced to four years in jail for a string of sex offences against boys on school trips.
The 67-year-old was found guilty of indecently assaulting seven teenage boys in his care while on camping and boating trips in the 1970s and 1980s.
Talbot, who was working as a biology teacher at a school in the Manchester area at the time, denied the allegations.
After a nine-day trial at Lanark Sheriff Court last month the jury took four hours to convict him of seven of the nine charges of indecent assault against him.
Sheriff Nikola Stewart, delivering her sentence, told Talbot he had “grossly abused the trust placed in him”.
“It is beyond doubt these trips were organised with sexual exploitation of these boys very much in mind,” she said.
“By denying your guilt and insisting on a trial, you put each victim through further trauma.”
The offences were against boys aged 15 to 17, and happened during separate trips to Scotland – one near the St Mary’s Loch area in Moffat, Dumfries and Galloway, and the other at the Caledonian Canal in Inverness in the Highlands.
During the trial, victims recalled the “horror” of being “singled out”.
Several witnesses told of incidents during camping trips, when they would wake up in the middle of the night to find Talbot inside their tents, touching them.
Talbot is already serving a five-year sentence for indecently assaulting two other schoolboys and his latest sentence will begin in August when the punishment part of his current jail term ends.
Talbot became a television personality during the 80s, regularly appearing on a floating weather map in Liverpool’s Albert Dock for ITV’s This Morning show.
