Francis opposed to Public Servants on contract

Attorney at Law,Mary Francis, has asserted that putting public servants on contract has done a disservice to this country.

Francis said it is a noble thing to want to be a career public servant and serve one’s country.

“But when you are taking those people on contract for two and three years and renew at very high salaries, it demoralizes the public service in the first place and then you have to give them a gratuity – all the money is going towards paying civil servants, that is what they have said at the Central Bank, the World Bank and so on,” the Human Rights Activist stated.

She declared that when a small segment of the society lives a ‘privileged life’ the majority of young people are ¬†adversely affected.

“That is why they resort to what they resort to,” Francis declared.

Francis said from her recollection, the argument that was presented at the time that public servants were put on contract was that there was need to attract highly qualified persons.

The outspoken Attorney at Law said perhaps at that time there were few such individuals.

However she observed that today there are many graduates.

“Now every other person has a post graduate degree so to me there is no need to have those persons there, saying that you are bringing in material that the private sector can attract and therefore you have to pay them high salaries,” Francis said during an interview with Radio Caribbean International.

She described the situation as being ridiculous.
