Asked whether he would have preferred to be Police Commissioner, National Security Minister, Hermangild Francis, has said that he prefers his current job.
The minister spoke during Newsmaker Live on DBS Television television on Wednesday.
In indicating why he pefers to be minister, Hermangild Francis said he is older now.
But he said if he were about twenty years younger he would have preferred to be Police Chief.
“You as Commissioner, you have to be able to motivate your men – that’s what leaders must do,” Francis said.
He said the men must be shown that their boss loves them and fights for them.
“So if you go to a police station and you find that the equipment there is so bad, you as Commissioner should be at that minister’s office every day making sure that he puts the proper furniture – the proper facilities for police officers to work,” the minister stated.
He said once individuals recognize that a superior has their welfare at heart, they will respond to the superior.
“Every time they talk about Commissioners of Police I remember Cuthbert Phillips,” Francis stated.
He said Phillips, who served as top cop from 1982 to 1988, did not only lead the police force but did a number of things to recognise police officers, including the creation of a credit union which people fought against.
“This is what you have to do – you have to be somebody that people will look up to, they will know that you are a no nonsense individual and when you do something correctly, we support you,” Francis said.
He asserted that once a Police Commissioner rises to such standards, the men of the police force will rise with him.
