Free wheelchairs will be available in Vieux Fort from Monday to people in the South who qualify.

The National Council Of And For Persons With Disabilities (NCPD) will be distributing the items from Monday, March 15 to Wednesday, March 17.

As a result, the organisation has invited people in need to contact its Vieux Fort office.

The NCPD says people from Canaries, Soufriere, Choiseul, Laborie and Vieux Fort can apply.

The council’s President, Merphilus James told St Lucia Times that  the organisation has 65 wheelchairs for the South.

He disclosed that the NCPD received a large donation of wheelchairs, walkers and crutches from LDS Charities.

LDS Charities is the humanitarian arm of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

James disclosed that the NCPD held successful ‘mobility clinics’ at the Castries City Hall and at Babonneau.

The Northern clinics assessed clients and provided them with wheelchairs, walkers or crutches.

But the Northern clinics have now ended, having distributed 75 wheelchairs plus 44 crutches and canes.

James said the NCPD is assessing people based on age, weight and level of activity.

He explained that in this way, council officials can provide them with the correct device.

“More harm can be done to someone if they receive an inadequate wheelchair,” James disclosed.
