Bordelais Correctional Facility (BCF) officers held members of a garbage collection crew Thursday morning, after discovering drugs and other contraband hidden in a garbage truck.
A BCF official told St Lucia Times that the haul included mobile telephones.
According to the official, officers found the marijuana and other items during a routine search about 10.30.am.
Garbage crews collect rubbish twice weekly from the prison.
The BCF official said one member of the three-man crew Thursday morning accepted responsibility for the contraband.
The official said police will lay charges shortly.
However, the official explained that it’s not the first time that garbage crews have attempted to smuggle drugs and other contraband into the BCF.
The latest seizure of contraband at the facility follows an uprising by inmates recently.
The inmates had earlier used contraband mobile telephones to post videos and live stream their grouses on social media.
They were complaining about long delays in trials and inadequate measures at the BCF to control an outbreak of COVID-19 at the prison.
But BCF officers, with the help of the SSU, put down the uprising.
At least two inmates and a ‘few’ officers sustained injuries as a result.
