SKY NEWS:- A Florida alligator found with a dead body in its jaws near a lake dumped the remains and swam off once police showed up.

Police in Lakeland, about 35 miles east of Tampa, said they received a 911 call on Tuesday afternoon after someone reported seeing the creature with the cadaver on the shore of Lake Hunter.

Police said the body is that of a male of unknown age, and it appears to have been deceased for at least a day.

It is not clear if the alligator killed the person or simply found the body.

“It appears – prematurely, a little early – that maybe this body was in the lake more than a day from looking at the body,” said Lakeland police spokesman Sgt Gary Gross.

When officers arrived, the alligator let go of the body and swam away, but continued to circle for about an hour.

Sgt Gross said a medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

Officials from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission have been called to trap the alligator.

Last Saturday morning, Lakeland police received a 911 call from someone who reported finding a shirt in the water with pair of trousers or jeans and a backpack nearby.

The caller also reported there had been an aggressive alligator by the boat ramp during the week.
