Stabroek News:- International cricketer Christopher Barnwell is now free on bail after he was charged yesterday with assaulting a police officer during a cricket match.
Barnwell, of Lot 8 Albert Street, Georgetown, appeared before Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in Georgetown, where he was read the charge that on March 23rd, at Eve Leary Police Ground, he assaulted a police officer.
Barnwell pleaded not guilty to the charge. His attorney, Savannah Barnwell, told the court that Barnwell has no conviction against him.
It is alleged that the two men were playing against each other in a cricket match at the Police Ground, where a fight started and Barnwell allegedly pushed the officer.
Police prosecutor Shellon Daniels did not object to bail being granted but asked that a condition of Barnwell’s release be that he stays away from the officer and has no communication with him in any manner.
The cricketer was granted $30,000 bail with the condition attached, and the matter was adjourned until August 19th for statements.
