The President of the Saint Lucia Teachers Union ( SLTU), Julian Monrose, has accused Prime  Minister, Allen Chastanet, of seeking to  ridicule the  professional qualifications of teachers, by indicating  recently that the problem with the education system is that teachers are not sufficiently qualified.

Monrose pointed out that the Certificate or Associate Degree in teacher education, which determines that a teacher is qualified, is provided by Sir Arthur Lewis Community College and endorsed by the University of the West Indies (UWI), through the joint Board of Teacher Education of the Eastern Caribbean.

‘It is a regional qualification that determines whether you can practice in the teaching profession as a qualified teacher,’ he stated.

He observed that many teachers pursue further study and many are not upgraded by the Ministry of Education.

‘We are aware that Sir Arthur Lewis Community College used to offer a two year degree in teacher education – mathematics, language and other areas and in 2017, the government withdrew support for that programme, so that full time programme that helped teachers has been withdrawn,’ the SLTU official said.

However Monrose observed that teachers continue to do online courses because they understand that the more qualified they are, the better contribution they can make to the education system.

Monrose recalled that Chastanet had indicated that he was not going to spend money  on repairing or building new schools until there is a new curriculum.

‘The truth is, it takes time and it is a lengthy process developing a new curriculum. So we understand by that that the Prime Minister is saying that  the government will continue to allow students and teachers to be in deplorable conditions until we have a new curriculum,’ he said.

‘That makes absolutely no sense,’ the SLTU President declared.

He compared the situation to a parent telling a child that the house roof will not be repaired until the child makes his bed.

‘These are two separate issues – yes the union supports the continued review of curricula, but we also say that schools must be safe and the environment must be healthy for students,’ Monrose asserted.

He asserted that Saint Lucian teachers have started the new academic year unhappy because the deplorable condition of some school buildings has not been addressed.

‘The Ministry of Education had promised the union that they would have done some work on some of the schools over the Christmas vacation, but that has not been done,’ Monrose lamented.

He observed that as a result, some schools continue to deteriorate.

Monrose explained that the SLTU wants students to be educated in a healthy and safe environment.

‘We keep saying that to the Ministry of Education,’ he disclosed.

    • And since you are a Detective Mediocre can you tell us exactly what is the needed qualification to be a teacher? and what exactly is the percentage with and without.

    • New Testament Verse of the Day:
“If you love your father or mother more than you love me, you are not worthy of being mine; or if you love your son or daughter more than me, you are not worthy of being mine.”

      – Matthew 10: 37

  1. Finally Mr Monrose has come out to say something. The education system has been under assault by this Government for some time. They stopped the programme at SALCC, Chastanet threatened not to fix schools until he sees “what a model school looks like,” laptops programme cut, teachers being quietly dismissed to cut costs…I guess he’s showing his voice now that salary negotiations are coming up…

    • Simeon, you have brothers, sisters, cousins, nephews, nieces and perhaps children who go to school. What have you said? Is it only Monrose and the Union with a voice? Can you not let yours be heard or are you too much a coward?

  2. What is it in Chastanet’s comments that is tantamount to ridicule? Will someone please enlighten me?

    • How can a not so bright PM who just babbles with no thought process say the educators of our children who are trained by tax payers and higer tertiary education be in a position to ridicule our teachers? When a PM cannot read, forms sentences and usea “collectively together” in a sentence how do you ridicule our teachers Winston? Give me a damn break please

    • He has ridiculed the qualifications of our dedicated teachers who work under strenuous conditions. And the ridicule is coming from one who was deemed the biggest liar by three high-court judges and one who up to this day, cannot produce his certificate of the degree/bouillon that he claims that he has.

      • Strenuous conditions like 13 weeks paid vacation (The year has 52 weeks btw). Ceasing teaching two weeks before school closes just to avoid having to work a few days during the student vacation to distribute report books. Teachers now work far less hours than teachers 20 years ago. They come up with all sorts of ways to avoid classroom instructions. Is there any surprise the standard of education has reduced so drastically over the years despite the improvements in technology? In medicine, science, communication, technology has improved output. Except for teachers in St. Lucia.
P.S. I used to be a teacher and left because of the nonsense. Absenteeism by teachers, non-punctual, classes always unsupervised while the gossip in the staff room.

  3. Monrose has the color of rose(red), so nothing different is expected of him. he definitely knows that there are teachers who are square pegs in round holes. Monrose himself is one of them as he seems not to know the meaning of RIDICULE(to make fun of) as we say in slang PAPYSHOW. To be fair there is nothing in what Chastanet has said that borders on ridicule. Labour is firing from all cylinders. Monrose was mute when Kenny offered teachers 0 0 1 increase. HYPOCRITES!!!!!!!

  4. Education should be one of the top priorities of any government. It one of the only means that lifts many poor people out of abject poverty. The crumbling and dilapidated school buildings, the inadequate curriculum, the measly remuneration of teachers are legacies of the SLP. Despite the SLP’s gross mismanagement, this present government has unbearably managed to exacerbate this already dire situation. By refusing to rectify the deplorable state of affairs of the education system, is to jeopardize the future of the youthful generation and the entire country. Quote:”Better build schoolrooms for the boy than cells for the man.” This government’s incompetence is shockingly unnerving and deeply embarrassing.

    • If teaching is so glorious why don’t you do it. I’m am sure that you have problems managing your 1 or 2 kids. So imagine how difficult a job it is to manage 30 plus of your kids that you do not take time to raise properly. Before you try removing the spec in the teachers’ eyes try training and teaching your own kids. Furthermore do you know how difficult it is to correct scripts in the hours that you are paid for. What about our weekends and nights spent correcting papers. If it was so easy to correct scripts why then does CXC give results months after.

      • I guess you missed that part about where the writer said: “I used to be a teacher and left…” Here is a perfect example that proves Chastanet is correct. Some teachers can’t even bloody read and comprehend. How can someone like you educate a child when you lack those basic skills?

      • @ Joe. Many people always claim that the used to be in a profession and they left it when criticizing other professions. That does not make it true. However if you believe that someone like me (all teachers) are not capable of educating your little cretins (is the name calling necessary) then by all means feel free to hoe school them. Instead of bashing teachers and other professions why don’t you take a look at yourself (all parents and society) and examine what you are doing wrong that’s producing so many bad elements in society. After all I guess it is teachers who are responsible for producing criminals.

      • JOE JOE JOE, Not Impressed did not miss the part. He/she chose to ignore adsa’s lie. Now Joe if you fell for adsa’s lie then you need a lot a lot a lot a lot of help.

    • Where is your evidence. Has medicine, science, communication, technology has improved in St. Lucia? Once again where is your evidence. Stop making baseless statements and get your facts. How can you prove that teachers 20 years ago worked more. Further more every profession has a few bad eggs. Stop generalizing.

  6. BOY OH BOY, TEll me is it right that one the first day of school teachers some teachers did not come to teach our children, While assembly teachers are walking in to school grounds, soem see our children as daft because some of them dont care, some have degrees but dont terach or better yet cant teach. The PM statement may have been meant in a different context, but trust me. What have we seen in our schools result lately? When principles can speak about some teacher just come to school just for monies because they are also fed up? Mauy be that information the PM knows.

    • Has it ever occurred to you that your children are actually daft and it was inherited.

  7. You mean to tell me so many people are unaware that the majority of our teachers are jokers. Why should the government pay money to train teachers. If I apply for a job with WASCO as an engineer should I expect WASCO to train me? The Prime Minister is right: Too many of our teachers are not qualified and see the profession as just another job. They should go and get qualified before applying for positions.
The attempt to ridicule the intellectual capacity of the Prime Minister is utter rubbish. Everyone has seen and heard him speak.; Everyone has seen him read. He is as good as any other. So stop peddling this trash. It didn’t work in the election campaign and will not work now either.

    • I would call you stupid but that will be redundant. WASCO and many companies provide in-house training for their employees especially banks. Further more a job advertised by WASCO will have the required qualifications. You will not be considered for the position if you do not have the qualifications. I suppose both you and the Prime Mnister are experts in Teacher Education and much better than UWI and SALCC because although they have certified persons as teachers you guys say that they are not qualified to do so. Go figure. One more thing. What qualifies you to assess the qualifications and pedagogy of teachers.

  8. You can have the best curriculum with untrained teachers and have the best teachers without a good curriculum it makes no sense as stated by the PM.

These building did not get termite infested in 18 month and that’s a fact. Where was Monrose when even teachers were getting sick. Example at the Augier school, they had to be wear mask. Where were you and the Teachers Union. St Lucian has moved beyond these unions nonsense of the past. We all know what is happening at the school today and the past 7 years under SLP administration. We all know Monrose motive. It is as clear as dirty water. These teachers need to have a conscience. They need to tell Monrose the Union disappointed them and the poor student under SLP.

    • What then is the PM doing about it? Constantly flying away, giving foreigners all our money and running his mouth. How is that solving the problem. SLP is no longer there. Solve the problems you were put there to solve and stop making them worse.

    • Kelba, you have to be a man of immense intelligence judging from your postings. You may even have some credence with your accusation about hypocrisy but never allow politics to color your thoughts. I certainly agree with you that the previous administration left many important things undone. They have no moral authority to condemn any political party. Having said that, one has to refrain from living in the past. We should use our past to help to guide us from making the same mistakes. You don’t drive looking in the rear mirror constantly. We should be more forward looking. I have a special affinity for teachers. They should be encouraged and be given the requisite training and resources to improve their craft. They should not be condemned, ignored or be subjected to ridiculed by those in authority.

  9. Lots of silly and nonsensical comments here. Only hope most of those bloggers are not teachers, for if they are, “Lord help us!” However I do believe that the education system in SLU is designed for failing our students rather than educating them, and if you ask me, I will agree that teachers have a big role to play in this failure. Julian Monrose knows this very well, but like others he too has his own agenda.

    • Well get it right:(1) teachers do not design the education system. (2) if you have no agenda that makes you very useless. (3) You right, with bloggers like you, “”LORD HELP US””. LOL.

  10. @ “Acting Inside”, Where in my comment did I say that teachers design the education system? Where? Well if we have folks like you on the inside, once again; ” Lord help us! LOL.
